[Project 44] Maple Dining Table & Benches

[member=4105]tjbnwi[/member] thanks Tom!

[member=2912]Don T[/member] thanks Don!

[member=66813]rmhinden[/member] thanks man! Hahaha yes she was exploring it. I think it still smelled like finish.

[member=2242]tallgrass[/member] thanks man! Good question. I probably could have used less. I was a little worried about the top. This was a lot of hard work for me and it was a really nice solid top, and I had to cut into it with Shaper! I didn't want to risk a bad cut and ruining the top just because I was being stingy on the tape. OK so with the larger router, GREAT point. I actually tried this. My hand router is a Festool OF1400. I installed a larger bit on it and here was the issue. The base of the OF1400 is significantly smaller than the base of the Shaper Origin. The Shaper Origin is quite large. I was a little worried about the router tipping inside of the pocket. Because the Festool router couldn't span the full 6" width, I was really worried it would tip. The Shaper Origin just barely smaller, was able to "ride" on the top or bottom of the 6" strip almost 100% of the time. Now obviously I could have been smart and routed the pocket in a spiral fashion from the inside, or something like that, to avoid this problem, but I was worried I'd get myself into a situation where I had to cut something out in the middle I missed. Anyways, it probably could have worked. I did though after this process order a flattening bit with 1" cut diameter from BitsBits with a 1/4" shank, for the Shaper. Shaper is underpowered for that bit but just turn the speed down and take shallow passes is my hope. I think it'll go way faster than the 1/4" bit I used.

[member=44099]Cheese[/member] thank you sir! Thank you so much. You have a good eye. Those are two big points. I had to line up my round-over bits for the wife so she could choose. I did samples for her on a scrap. She really wanted the smallest possible round-over to keep the lines clean, exactly what you said. I think I went with a 1/4" radius IIRC. And yes the brace pieces were a big discussion with me and her. I ended up building it without them obviously, and we put it in the floor of the garage. I had her stand at one of the smaller ends with her feet firmly planted right next to the bottom of the legs. I then pushed towards and away from her from the opposite end of the table at the very top. The idea was for me to see if the table racked at all to decide if the braces were needed. It was rock solid. I think largely due to the double-domino joints and everything is glued (except the top of course) and that all the pieces are solid 1.5" thick.

Thanks so much everyone! Starting in the benches now...

Matt

On the router side, I use a larger plexy base that I have made. I find larger bases are much more useful. With a CNC, you can make several size bases and swap them out easily. I have made several for my 1400, using the quick change ring. I love it. Not that you need any advise. Great work.

Matt, you can use the parallel guide for the rails to add stability to the router with a 5mm spacer under it to keep the base level with the top.  Much easier than making extra bases that need taken on and off.  Before I bought my Festool routers I have a PC 7518 that I made a large base with a vertical handle that let me edge rout on 2'x2' 3/8" acrylic pieces quickly on a vacuum base.  Anyone interested in that router, it's for sale.  Actually have two as these were great beasts.  The other lives in my original router table.

[member=2242]tallgrass[/member] that's a great idea. Thank you. I will make some!

[member=25351]rst[/member] another great idea. Thanks so much. I'll try it out!!

OK team ... the benches were finally made (took awhile) and this piece is 100% done. Pics below:

WOW  [eek]

Nice way to use the Shaper Origin for those pads!

I'll let someone else make a crack about how clean your shop is and how you could have probably eaten off of those benches from start to finish throughout the project picture progression.  Oh, wait, I think I just did anyway... ;)

What did you use for the thin kerf around the inside of the top where you put the seat brackets?  Run it over a table saw (I can't remember if you have a table saw or just a track saw), use a cutter on a router, or a thin plunge bit on a router?

Very nice Matt. Great finish to your project. Benches look good. I like the way they fit under the table.

Ron

More lazy and sloppy work.  [big grin] As usual and predictably great work. I think you should make something nasty , lazy and dirty. My therapy bills that you are giving me suck.

How do you like the Shaper Update. I will be updating tonight.

Keep up the great work, though at a slower, sloppier rate.

[member=75217]squall_line[/member] thanks! hahahaha. I know I know. it's clean. I've heard from others, trust me :)

I just used my standard 1/8" Forrest blade in the table saw set 9/16" or so down for the kerf. Luckily I remember before I glued it up!

[member=3192]rvieceli[/member] thanks so much Ron appreciate it man!

[member=2242]tallgrass[/member] hahahah thanks man. Appreciate it as always. So far so good on the Shaper update. I haven't really used any of the new features yet but no issues so that's always good!

Matt

Wow, that looks gorgeous! I love not only the result you get but also how clean you work [big grin] When I work on such a project I definitely get lost in my garage and my wife complains a lot about it. Last time I was working on an oak cabinet as a welcoming gift for my brother's new house in Istanbul and our cat got lost in our garage and we couldn't find her for 5 hours...

Beautiful work (as always) Matt.

I love the glass insert.

[member=76452]jeffers[/member] thanks so much man! Hahahah. That's awesome. I have certainly lost a cat in the garage before. they are very quiet and tend to hide in small spots.

[member=10147]jobsworth[/member] thanks man really appreciate it!

[member=72399]CeeJay[/member] thanks so much CeeJay really appreciate it man!
