Protecting MDF?

I got some water on my MDF and it bubbled the top a bit, also have some stains starting on it from misc things that have dropped on it this is not a big deal but I figure I should put a coat of something on it to help resist this stuff and protect it a bit.  I have some waterbase minwax polycrylic laying around I can use that or is something better out there?  What have people done so far?

Are you talking about the top of the MFT?  There has been some debate here about protecting the MFT top.  It might have benefits as far as water/moisture damage, but you don't want to make the top too slick.
