We recently had a new Miele dishwasher installed and it wasn't installed at the proper height because of a 1x2 filler strip that had been installed between the base cabinets just underneath the counter top. The dishwasher should have been just about flush with the underneath of the counter but it was almost 2" lower than it should be. The Miele installers never bothered to tell anyone about the strip needing to be removed and simply installed the unit and boogied. We removed the filler strip and had to figure out how raise the dishwasher the 2" gap that had been created. My 15 year son had it figured out in no time at all and working together, we got it raised to the proper level and reattached everything and now it's perfect. It really makes me proud that he has shown a real interest in home repairs and remodeling. He loves taking things apart and putting them back together. I should have known early on with his love of Legos! He has helped me with several projects around the house, most recently installing about 100 Blum soft closers and it's amazing how quickly he can analyze a problem and then solve it. Of course, he already has his first Festool, a CSX, and he uses it whenever possible. His love of using his hands and his reasoning ability was passed down from both his grandfathers and from me to some extent. [laughing] Unfortunately, both of his grandfathers are gone but they are looking down with smiles on their faces and with great pride. These are skills he can use the rest of his life. I'm a lucky dad...
