Hey all,

I've got a project to build four carriage doors for my garage and I found a design that I'd like to replicate. I am thinking this is red oak but wanted to see if you could help confirm this. Also, my garage doors get a ton of sunlight through out the day and I am wondering if Oak is the right way to go given the sun exposure. All feedback welcome..Thanks in advance everyone.

From that distance it doesn't look like oak to me.  Could you post a couple of detailed pictures that show a 300mm x 300mm (or 1' x 1', whichever) or so square of the wood - may be a couple of pictures with different grain?

I agree it's mahogany, I don't think sapele though. Tends to have tighter grain, might be African.
Spanish cedar makes a nice exterior door by the way

Thanks guys, very helpful. Spanish Cedar is in the mix as well so thanks for recommending.

Black locust is common for doors in harsh environments too. Any wood door would be quite heavy and need one hell of an opener
