My understanding is that vlies is available in 100, 280, and 800 grit. I have all of those.

I, also, have the green and white vlies in the surfix kit.

I do not understand what grit the white and green are.

Also, can the surfix oils be top-coated with a film finish?

The white and green Vlies do not have a grit because they are not meant to be an abrasive. Grit refers to particles on the paper or whatever that's used to cut into the material. These have none. They are meant to work the oil into the surface.

I believe the topic of top coats was asked before and the consensus was not to top coat. Honestly, I would need to ask someone else since I'm no expert on the topic.

I use the green vlies to work the oil into the surface and the white vlies to mop up any excess and burnish the surface. The white vlies is gentler than the green. Think 0000 steel wool versus 000 for the green or something along those lines.

I apply the oil (I use Tried and True) very thinly and I reuse the vlies pads many times.

Thanks for the reply, RL.

When you state......

"I apply the oil (I use Tried and True) very thinly and I reuse the vlies pads many times."

Do you mean that you use thinner to thin the "Tried and True"?

Trosey, I don't thin the oil, I apply it straight from the can with a rag- but as thinly as possible. It's not like some oil finishes where you flood the surface and then wipe off the excess. After half an hour or so, I use a folded paper towel to remove any oil that's left on the surface and then I go to work with a rotex 125, a hard pad and a white vlies pad. It leaves a smoother, satin surface than I've ever been able to achieve with any other finish.

I also am able to get several uses out of my green and white vlies by applying the oil with the Festool sponge applicator - this gives enough oil to thoroughly wet the surface, but does't leave it flooded.

Shane, am I mistaken in my thought that the white vlies are Aluminum Silicate based abrasive (1200-1500) and the green vlies are Aluminum Oxide based abrasive (600)? Similar to 3M Scotch-Brite?

A side note the German "vlies" is pronounced like the English "fleece," and they have have roughly the same meaning.

I learned something new today and it isn't even 10am! Thanks for posting this nugget.

Like I said, no abrasive properties for the Surfix Vlies.
