Questions on veneer tape with PSA backing

I am doing a rare plywood job, and even rarer, I decided to try out some veneer tape with pressure sensitive adhesive on the back.  I do not have any specialized tools for processing hundreds of feet of this stuff (or even a couple of feet).  Can anyone recommend an acceptable way to trim it and finish it off?  Is sanding with a RA sander a good or a bad idea?  Should I plan to trim it with a sharp chisel? It is going to be painted.

Thanks.

I prefer trimming any wood edge banding with my MFK 700. Faster and cleaner than using a trimmer.

Sander is a bad idea. Spreads the adhesive and you may sand through the face veneer if you're not careful.

Make sure you roll it on well.

I have rolls of the 3M PSA edge veneer tape, both raw and pre-finished.

Bill, are you using the FastCap veneer w/PSA?

I recently used their prefinished Maple for the first time and loved it. I did invest in their speed roller, flush cut snips and edge trimmer. If you are doing a large job I think they are a must. The roller is a lot better than my old J-roller.

This video pretty much shows it all: http://www.fastcap.com/estore/pc/fastedge-peel-and-stick-edgebanding.asp

Have fun!

Richard, that is it exactly.  I went ahead and ordered the trimmer.  Thanks for the quick reply.

Tom, I would love to spring for an MFK 700, but it is not in the cards right now.  I don't do very many jobs like this, so the trimmer should work for a while.  Thanks for the reply.

I have had good results with FastEdge.  Havn't had any call backs on it.  I know some people love it and some hate it. From what I understand the the  adhesive is basically CA (superglue).  It is really sticky so handle with care when peeling and applying. I have found that I get the best bond by rolling between each step.  I use the Virutex end trimmer, FastCap roller (works really well) , FastCap  edge  break sander , FastCap carbide edge trimmer.

Stick it on... roll

Trim ends ..... roll

Trim edge  .... roll

Sand edge .... roll

Sounds tedious but if the tools are all at hand it goes fast and gives a good bond.

I especially like using the prefinished  when I am using prefinished plywood. Just makes the whole deal a big time saver.

In another thread I asked for advice on applying plastic laminate and it was suggested to use the fastcap tape for the edges in conjunction with contact cement for the faces. I was skeptical but it worked great and was a huge time saver.

I did learn that the tape really gums up router bits used to trim the excess. My solution was to apply the 7/8" tape to the edge of the material, roll it down and then use a sharp razor blade to trim the excess before removing the plastic backing and applying/rolling down the laminate edge. The advantage is that you can immediately trim the laminate and then move to the next edge, no time lost applying contact adhesive and waiting for it to dry.

Like Seth I rolled it down between each step. I recall the directions stating that this was necessary and that the adhesive cures over time also.

Great stuff.

"Our high performance acrylic "Ultra BondTM" PSA adhesive increases in strength as it cures, providing a long lasting permanent bond."

We use a lot of edging at the workshop here both heat applied and stuck down.
Small pieces get edged with half round file and sandpaper.
Most bigger jobs get the OFK500 with edge trim.
Gumming up of blades is vastly reduced using a cleaner spray on the bit in advance.
The OFK500 is an excellent piece of kit and has performed superbly well for us.

Thanks for all the responses everyone!  I have the stuff applied to some shelf fronts.  I rolled it down with a big ole dowel I have in the shop right now, and am waiting on a trimmer.  I would love to add a MFK to the Festool stable, but I just spent a bunch of money on a Hammer.  ;)  So I'm going to have to let the bank account recover for a while.

Bill,

You can also use a veneer scraper, I found they apply a lot of pressure. Available online for around $15, of make one from scraps of masonite and hardwood:

I have not tried it on pre-finished edgeband but it worked great on the iron on stuff before I switched to PSA. (Never did really like a J-roller...)

Have fun.

The FastCap roller works great. The design makes it so if you roll off the end you won't bust your knuckles the way you can with a 'J'-roller.

Okay, my Fastcap trimmer came today.  It worked great!  [big grin]  I would not want to have to do several hundred feet of trimming using this tool, but for the little bit I had to do, and for the small jobs I sometimes get where I could use this PSA veneer tape, I think it will do fine.  I passed on the nipper, but I think on the next job I will spring for it.

Thanks again for all the responses!

How much money can you spend on a hammer? $10.00? ;D
