Rabbit/rebate existing drywall at edge of patch?

Putting in a large drywall patch and paint buildup is leaving a bit of a transition. I'm wondering if it makes sense to rabbit the old drywall enough to give the tape a place to set in to reduce the amount of mudding and leveling that will need to be done. Is this just a dumb idea? Has anyone done this before? If so, what tool did you use?
I tried using my vecturo but it was difficult to get a level cut.

Thanks!

I've never done that.  I patch over a period of three days.  First day with a 4" wide blade, second day with an 8" wide blade, and the third day with a 12" wide blade.  The same as I so for any taping job.  The 12" wide blade basically spreads the patch over 20" and it is not noticeable.
