Rail clamps and mfs style extrusions

Good question.  Just to be clear, you're referring to the 80/20 type extrusions, and not the simple T-Track, correct? If there's someone who knows the answer, it would be [member=8712]Richard/RMW[/member]

Here's a picture of the clamps being used in an 80/20, 15 series extrusion.

Does the 80/20 refer to the dimensions ie. 80mm x 20mm? And the series 15 bit?

It's to do with Pareto principle. There's a little bit of history and philosophy on the manufacturers website athttps://www.8020.net/attitude

The series is to do with the size of the profile. Series 10 is 1" and Series 15 is 1.5". Then in the metric profiles Series 20 is 20mm etc. Again, more info athttps://www.8020.net/university-tslot

5/16"-18 carriage bolts also fit perfectly for attaching whatever you want to the 15 series rails.

And this is how I fastened it to the front of a 1 3/4" maple work top.

Curious [member=44099]Cheese[/member] on your maple worktop, do you use MFT accessories like clamping elements or clamp dogs, and then just put a longer bolt in the knob?

At some point I may want to make a sturdier bench for more handtooling, but I don't want to overdo the thickness to limit clamp down options.

Thanks I'm a bit wiser now.
[member=44099]Cheese[/member] ..I guess you can't tighten the bolts when the series 15 is in place.

I would probably be looking at something wider ( like the mfs extrusions ) as this would give a wider face to clamp to.

I just drilled through holes where the Spax screws are located so that I could tighten them up.

Look at the 1530 or 1545 series. They're 3" and 4.5" wide respectively.

Here are some clamping options that I use in conjunction with the 8020.
Festool quick clamp separated with a toilet washer to hold the clamp roughly in position.
Clamping elements.
Veritas dogs.
Bessey clamps with longer 8mm bolts.
Woodpeckers clamp with 5/16" carriage bolts.
Lots of options even with a thicker top.

Huh -- is that toilet washer because the holes are 3/4?
