So I refinish floors and staircases.  So last month I was in a pinch, I was doing some stair treads and risers. And I realized that I didn't have any rotex sanders with me. I always use a rotex of some sort to do risers, because they are aggressive enough and just the best option.  I obviously use a flooring edger for the treads.  So I did have my RAS with me, I ended up removing the dust port and the mechanical shroud, it turned the RAS into a stair riser killer.  I shredded right through 100 years of oil based poly in no time at all, had to keep a DCS running next to me, but overall, the RAS performed awesome. I rarely break out the RAS, but I believe I found a new way of removing old finish a lot quicker.    Just thought I would share....    Sam

Why do you call this 'alternative' use? I was under the impression this was exactly what the RAS was meant for.

Yes it is.  I said alternative because I took it half apart, so it actually worked like a rotex x10...  Had I left the guard on, it would have gouged the wood.

Seth,
That's it.  Nice paper.  I always use the white paper. 40 grit, on all the 5" and 6" sanders. Have been using that paper for years for material removal. Works great and lasts very long.  I only ever use festool paper, I have a few fein 6" sanders that I use the same paper on with great success.  Great paper.  Best tool ever. Can't wait to get my latest order.  I'm drooling..lol.
