Nice vid. The extra handle is for using the RAS as a grinder when you remove the entire head with dust hood.

Thanks for all the comments. My buddy is in film production so he has been shooting the videos for me. When and why would you want to take the dust shroud off?

In the past the RAS was available in a couple of different configurations, a motor body with a couple of different clip-on heads to give it different functionality. If you take the head of you're basically left with a normal grinder. In Europe Festool still offers wire brushes for it, and to use the wire brushes you'd best take the head of. See this link for an example, the now discontinued BF-1.

In the pic below you can see the head to make it a normal (albeit slow) grinder.

I noticed it hesitated a bit. Do you find any difficulty working on finely detailed profiles? I've been thinking about getting one of these for coping and this might be the video that pushes me over the edge.

And, what about those Kapex wings in the back? Did you do a post on those?

I had told you what that extra handle was for and that Rick Bush said they'll probably be taking it out from future RAS's since it's not needed here.  Guess that implies there are no plans to ever have any accessory heads in N.A.

Good job on the whole video production and new acting career.  We'll have to find out if Brice and Paul-Marcel are worried.  [big grin]

The ras is slower then the grinder was but I will deal with it because of the dust collection. The fiberfix pad really helps with more detailed moldings. For higher end jobs I use the ras and get most of the material out then finish with a file fir a real tight fit. In the video I just used the ras and the joint came out really good. There is more videos coming soon one with the ras and some hard cherry base the stand for my kapex and the clamping elements. They are just getting edited. I am also planning on getting the ug stand and doing a comparison video between the 2 stands as well as some onsite videos.

Awesome video and very well done!  Very professional and thanks for sharing about the fiber fix pad.  What grit paper do you usually use to scribe and cope?

I use 50 and 36 grit paper. 50 us perfect for softer wood and 36 for harder. The fiberfix pad is important to getting your copes as crisp as possible with just the ras.

Great video, Dave!  I also like that you covered the FiberFix pad.  I haven't used that pad at all yet though a fellow FOGger clued me in on it a couple weeks ago.  In my case, I use it more for sculpting and shaping since I can do that with a RAS and not look like Fozzie Bear.  Well, moreso than usual, anyway.

Great demo.  I enjoyed it.  Another FOGGER commented that he thought the RAS could be used to power carve like an Arbortech on a grinder.  I was dubious, but now I see how the RAS could give my grinder a run for its money.
