Hi all, Can this machine be used as this, for example to cut metal like say on car panels? And not only as a remover of paint, rust etc.

Cheers,
Jacques.

Yes it can it come with a guard and the nuts to hold cutting/grinding discs

If you're going to use it on metal while connected to your dust extractor, be sure to get the spark trap.  Otherwise, there could be a risk of fire.

Thanks Shane, I'll look into that.

Cheers,
Jacques.
as Shane rightly pointed out you do need a spark trap when grinding metal with extration they are however not cheap so if you only have a small amount of work to do on metal it may be worth considering not using extraction if circumstances permit.

Mostly for working underneeth cars, but also for shaping/removing metal stuff in walls. (trap needed here I guess).
If not for something else, I could save a pile of working clothes, not being burnt by hot particles  [big grin]

Cheers,
Jacques  ;)

ps: thanks guys, you people are unstoppable in good advices.

The spark trap is actually more expensive than a good 125mm/5'' angle grinder.

When working with metal, I wouldn't worry about dust extraction. There's no fine dust hanging in the air and a quick sweep of the floor after you're done is enough.

You might run out of power with the RAS. It's only rated at 500 watts at 3800 rpm, where for example my Elu angle grinder, which surely isn't the strongest of all, has 900 watts at 10.000 rpm. And sometimes it gets jammed to a full stop on the piece I'm working on.

It's nice to explore the full potential of any tool you have, and the RAS' similarity to an angle grinder sure makes you wonder what it's potential is. But it's geared towards sanding and not to metal work. I wouldn't bother using the RAS for metal work and get a real angle grinder instead.

Hi,
Thanks for the advice. I do have some okay angle grinders already, though I always prefer smal ones, because of the narrow spaces underneath cars etc. 115mm - 600watts and 125mm 750watts. I never liked bigger ones with bigger discs.

I judt saw the Ras as an attempt to combine two machies. True, it's only 500Watts which is a little on the low end, nah.. quite little.
I'll think it over during the weekend.
Cheers,
Jacques.

If you get the chance get your dealer to let you try it out I think you will be suprised by it.and you have the thirty day return so no risk

In all fairness, I'll do that tomorrow morning. Thanks.

We don't have the 30 day return policy here in Denmark, unless you are a toolpoints member, which I somehow did not join. I don't really see the point in having 50$ rebate on lets say a total of 7 machines in one year like I bought, being offered a few sanding papers or the like... Quite silly in my view. I doubt I'll buy 7 more machines every year  [big grin], though I'll for sure get some more extra's like parralles guides etc. But that was ot.

Cheers,
jacques.

ps: Amazing how I can spend half an evening on a festool forum and a Laverda forum instead of watching silly footbal on tv..  [big grin]

Same here. A huge amount of jobs on metal can be done with a 125mm grinder. I have only used a bigger one on metal once in my life when we had to cut away the rear section of a car. I do use a 230mm grinder sometimes on 30x30x5cm concrete tiles when laying pavement.

Hmm, good idea. I used my small 115mm one to do the same (other shape and smaller tiles), and turned them around, or cut half and knocked them in half/size.

Cheers,
Jacques  ;)
