I would offer that the Rotex would be in most instances a superior tool for polishing. With the two different rotation settings it is a more versatile tool. Additionally, the rotex setting which is most commonly used for rapid material removal in sanding produces a hologram free final polished surface. You can read several threads here about using the Rotex for polishing and detailing.
I would definitely not recommend the RAS for polishing. The RPMs are too high for that application and it wasn't designed for polishing. The just not the right machine for the job. A Rotex or Shinex would be your best option.

If you're looking for versatility, then the Rotex is your tool. Aggressive sanding, fine finish sanding and polishing. It shares all of the same polishing accessories with the Shinex since they're both 150mm (6").
