I Have a project coming up, tile on plywood must be removed down to plywood.
The cement bonding the tiles to the plywood has always been a time consuming task to remove, (chisel and hammer).
Its been at least a week since my last festool purchase and I am suffering withdrawls (Green Coke).
Would The RAS115 be the ticket for this project,,,, connected to my 36AC, and if I do purchase the 115 what abrasives do I go for?
Thanks Joe Dirt

I would think the RAS would work well for this..Any reason you couldn't just level it down as best you can and put a 3/8" sub over the plywood and go from there? What are you putting back down on the ply for flooring?

1/4" underlay is going down on top of "cleaned" plywood then laminent flooring. I would like to eliminate excess labour, plus I like to buy tools, hence the 115.

I suppose it will work with the right abrasives on it, but the pad is small. Not sure how much space you have to do.

I think the RAS could do some damage. As for abrasives, you can only get Saphir for the RAS, so the choice is limited. Wether it should be 24, 36 or 50 depends on how hard the tile cement really is.

Edit: ok, I see they added Rubin 2 to the line up for the RAS, that's very recent. You don't want Rubin when removing cement.

I have been looking at the LS130 and the have a scraper attachment that may be better for you.

As someone who just went thru this last week - it depends.  I have removed thinset mortar before with my RAS and 24 grit and it flew thru it.  So I thought I had this job in the bag.  Tile popped up clean in virtual sheets off the thinset when I used my Bosch impact drill in the impact mode only.  4 disks later I hadn't made a cup of dust from this 1983 era thinset mortar.  I had to impact chisel it off of the substrate and then repair the damage before laying new tile.

As a lover of the RAS I would say give it a shot.  Worse case is that you have the thirty day policy.  Best case is that it works fabulous and you look like a hero.

The laminate floors I've dealt with are floating. Why not just install the laminate over the tile?

The RAS will remove the thin set, run it at 3 or 4. The RO also easily removes thin set.

How large is the area? A concrete rubbing brick makes quick work of thin set also. It can be used wet or dry.

I need to take up some bathroom times and will be left with a messy concrete surface ... I know it's a little wide of the topic, but I'd love to get one of these ...

I reckon one of these would make short work of your job  [big grin]

Forget the scrapper for the LS130.  For really easy, light scrapping maybe but certainly not for thinset.

I'd suggest one of the bigger floor scrappers then see what you have left.  As others have already mentioned the RAS will work but I think it's a bit slow unless you've removed the bulk of the thinset first.

I am staring at doing this job on my own house in the next year or two..Or when I stop spending money on Festools and get back to spending it on materials. I honestly would not want to use the RAS for this unless the area was very small. In fact I think I would rather stab my own eyes out than RAS the amount of mortar I have to deal with.

Floor scraper all the way, RAS for smaller areas where the scraper can't reach.

I'm a contractor , so,,,,, this next one 300sf,,,then?????????
But  also time is money, when I buy Festool I put them to work, everyday buy all my crew (after a brief education).
I tend to baby them when they are brand new but in the end they are just tools.
