I'm not sure if this is the correct forum or if this should go under building materials.

I'm looking for feedback/advice/commentary.

This patio door is rotten and someone attempted to fix it in the past. It looks like someone just ran a board across the bottom to fix.

Plan:
Make two new doors out of douglas fir quarter sawn (I'm open to other suggestions for material).
The door is 1.5" thick two 3/4" boards should work pretty well. I plan on traditional mortis and tenon joinery.

Comments? Suggestions?

Thanks.

Vertical grain douglas fir is not a terrible choice, but probably not my first.  Mahogany, cypress, spanish cedar or even white oak would likely hold up better.  I like the idea of laminating two pieces together for added stability.  The downside is the lamination could be a point of failure if not properly adhered.  It would be easy to use titebond III, although I'd go with a quality epoxy for the lamination and M&T joints.

Greg Burnet has a good article about building wood storm doors that might be of use to you. It's in JLC but I don't recall the date of the issue. I have it here somewhere and will take a look unless someone can post the date before I find my copy of the magazine.

The article is in the Sept 2014 issue, page 28.

Thanks to FatRoman for the assistance!

I recommend using boracare as a preservative regardless of which wood you use, just sayin....

Accoya?

http://www.accoya.com

As easy to machine as softwood, guaranteed 25 years underground, 50 years above ground against rot.  Plus they reckon painting cycles are a quarter of conventional timbers, as the wood doesn't swell and shrink.

First off thanks everyone for the suggestions and article.

I priced out accoya and it looks like it will run ~$210 in materials. I will also price out Spanish cedar and white oak.

What part of the country are you ?
That sill looks like it needs some work too.

I'm in Tx and yes the sil probably needs work. The house is a project house and I just now getting around to figuring out what to do with the door.

I'd laminate 2 pieces of timber to get your 1.5 thickness, domino the door together , use west system expoxy clamp sand paint, install a decent sill and install the doors

Nope. I looked at them but hard to justify for this project. I'm probably going to use loose tenon joinery.
