I got an email yesterday from Tools of Trade and while looking thru the email I noticed that there is an article on the Festool Swordsaw:  http://www.toolsofthetrade.net/saws/cant-get-it-here-sword-saw_o.aspx      It mentioned that it was not available in North America at this time.  In the comments after the demo video there was an interesting statement:

I don't know if there is any accuracy to this statement but it might explain why an article was written about something that we can't get.

Makes you go [scratch chin] [scratch chin] [scratch chin] [scratch chin] [scratch chin]

Here is the demo video:

Wow. I think I'm having an "incident"! That is really slick and just in time for my landscape remodel! Pergolas....a deck....trellis' I think I'm going to have a heart to heart with the boss  [unsure]! Did you notice how most of the sawdust was ejected out the vac port? That is amazing so I am pretty sure using it in my woodshop would work with my Midi!

That's the kind of tool I go out of my way to find an excuse to need lol

Wow Peter, way to start the morning. he he he  [wink]
This should wake some people up.

I have no insider knowledge.  Just saw something that didn't make sense and went looking.  I too would be interested in one of these possibly but IF they were to make it over to to side of the pond I would love to see it sooner than later.  I anticipate that I will be bidding on a large landscape timber project in a month or so and I have been looking at other large bladed alternatives.  I am not interested in  $6K Mafell or a $3K Protool Beam Saw.  That would kill the budget.

I guess only time will tell.

Peter

I'd like to see that thing operate with a CT attached.  That would be even more cool.

i thought you guys already had tools like this?

Not exactly as refined but we do have an equivalent

Prazi Beam Cutter.  It attaches to a standard circular saw (they have several models which accommodate most saws)

I've never used the mafell, protool or festool but I do own the Prazi and for around $150 (without saw) it works great

I have one of these attached to a yellow saw, the only drawback is no oiling of the chain

the circ saws are all well different over here. no worm drive saws at all. unless we import em as far as i know.

think the sword saw is about £700  [eek]

those beam saw things look canny naughty like

Been in the trades for 40+ years,  that is the first tool that ever made me say .. Whoa that looks dangerous.  lol  And in the next thought AINT no way I am letting an employee use it haha

Peter, I'd chalk a comment like that up to anyone of us on the board and our knowledge of what's available overseas currently, our experience seeing products migrate over, awareness that protool has been merged with the big F, etc.  Likely just someone speculating?

Sean,

Hey, Shane likes to read speculation.  [poke]  Could I see a market for it?  Yep.  Would it be a small market?  Yep.  Do other smaller competitors have a similar product presence in NA at probably a higher price?  Yep.  Do I personally (not based on anything in particular) sense a shift towards a less conservative marketing strategy by Festool?  Yep.

Only time will tell.  I saw the CMS and Planex in Lebanon in 2009 and they finally made it oversees in 2013.  Stranger things could happen.

Regarding the danger of this tool, sure it can cause injury.  So can chainsaws that are popular .  The fact that the sword saw cuts on the top side of the blade and has a riving knife offers some protection.  Maybe that will help with the whole product liability / UL issues.

Just my thoughts.

. I would think that if the Prazi Attachment cleared hurdles, and has been sold here for years, then the Festool/Protool model should expect to be able to also be sold here.

Yes, it is pretty entertaining.  [big grin] I've not kept a record but should have for how often you guys get it right or wrong.
