recycling felled chesnut oak from Hurricane Irene...

Just finished staining and spraying the box, legs and top.  Interesting wood to work...never had it before, and can't find it anywhere commercially.  They say it's a lot like White oak, but it's not.  It behaves like red oak to work, but takes stain very differently.  Wife is very happy with the outcome.  We milled the stock to 5/4, kiln dried it, and let it stand for a year or so.  I am ready to assemble and put on legs.[attachimg=#]

Thank you. It's turned out to be a very warm wood to finish.  Sands up very nicely.....  I have some more, but not a lot.  I took about 400 bd ft out of the tree.  I used quite a bit for baseboard and trim.

Since you said you used a bunch for baseboard and trim, can I assume that you have a 'colonial' style home?

Wow... I have a classic A-frame craftsman. Lots of woodwork n the house.  I've added wainscoting and other home grown trim. I built an entire kitchen out of a huge hickory that came down as well. That was something else working with hickory!!!

This is what it looked like after the kiln.  they were 14 ft long.  I had some long moulding runs and wanted as few joints as possible.  It worked out great.

project is finished.  I did not realize that this wood species was so rare.  It was a pleasure to work with it.  I have more but not enough for a project like this...Thanks for your kind comments.
