Yeah a structural engineer designs it. The slab is 3"-4", it's not original. Originally it was probably a inch. The footings are 12" deep.

How come there is a second short beam with a post under it close to the longer one?

  You see that kind of view around downtown Chicago all the time. Old buildings with serious weight capabilities from heavy duty wood and metal hangers, and then you look around to see how little weight is actually being put on the building floor anymore since its original load and purpose are long gone, like a factory or warehouse.
I made some serious Yoga blocks for my wife in the 90's from some old truss beams that were being cut up and replaced because a long time roof leak had killed one end of the truss.  Clear Softwood, no knots, ran through my lunchbox planer beautifully.  That old growth stuff is amazing.  [smile]
