Replacement bits for counter sink.

I just receive some replacement bits for the 3.5mm counter sink  #491795 (after a 2 month wait) and they are actually shipped in a box of 5.
I figure I would mention it because the festool web site doesn't mention how many bits you get or they hide the information well.

Maybe someone can post the part number for the 5 pack of 3.5 and 4.5.  I've bought both the 3.5 and 4.5 replacement and they came in each's (single qty.).  I couldn't find a part number when ordering so I just old my salesman what was needed.  I like the Festool Bits but wish they had longer flutes to keep the hole clean, my wife uses brad point bits in hers.  They brad points are very agressive and prone to tear out on the back if you don't have a backer block.

Interesting. Maybe I got lucky and got shipped the wrong part. On the box there is a sticker with the part number #491795 which might have been added by the dealer.
Under the sticker there is a Festool sticker with part number #494445 and the mention 5x TIN D 3,5/BSTA/5.
I guess it was worth waiting 2 month  ;D

I'd be interested if one of the dealers could comment.  I still need a replacement for each caused by my muriatic acid incident but think $16 for a single 1-1/2" long 3.5 or 4.5mm twist bit is a bit steep....which is how the description reads.

Note that on the german web site #491795 show up as a pack of 5 bits priced 12.70 Euro

US $16 is a relative bargain, if for the same 5 pack compared to 12.70 Euros at the current exchange rate.

There appear to be two discrepancies here - differing part numbers and differing quantities in the pack. The first is easier to explain than the second...

So we have two part numbers for the 3.5mm replacement bit - 491795 and 494445.

The current on-line USA Festool catalogue in PDF format says:

MWSnap058.gif

The printed 2005-2006 UK catalogue says:

Csk_Drill_Bit_UK_Old.jpg

The current on-line 2007 UK catalogue in PDF format says:

MWSnap059.gif

From these catalogues, we see that...

3.5mm bit is 491795 in US 2007 and UK 2005 catalogues, but 494445 in UK 2007 catalogue
4.5mm bit is 493274 in US 2007 and UK 2005 catalogues, but 494446 in UK 2007 catalogue
5.0mm bit is 491794 in all US and UK catalogues

It therefore seems that Festool is in the process of changing the part numbers of the 3.5 and 4.5mm bits, so when Emmanuel got a packet which had both 491795 and 494445 part numbers, they both refer to the same diameter of bit.

As regards quantities, in each case shown above, the quantity is shown as "1", which implies that if you order any of these part numbers, you get just one replacement bit. It is consistent, but also consistently expensive! However this is where things start to get very cloudy.

Note the UK designation of the 3.5mm bit - TIN D3.5 F.BSTA. This presumably decodes as "Titanium Nitride coating, diameter 3.5mm, for BSTA counterbore with depth stop". This relates quite well to the packet Emmanuel got, which was marked "TIN D 3,5/BSTA/5", but note the /5 at the end. This seems to indicate a packet of 5.

The UK Festool Price List  shows the following entry:

494445    EB-BSTA D 3,5/5x      10,50 GBP excl VAT

So now we have a discrepancy - the current UK PDF catalogue implies that 494445 is one single bit, but the current UK price list states that 494445 comes in a packet of 5! Also, the price list gives the designation "EB-BSTA D 3,5/5x"

To add to the confusion(!), the UK website lists both old (491795) and new (494445) part numbers:

MWSnap061.gif

Note how 491795 is listed as 1 per packet (costing 18.41 GBP), with a minimum order qty of 5 (92.05 GBP!), whilst 494445 is listed as 5 per packet (costing 18.41), with a minimum order quantity of 1.

Some on-line sellers seem to be selling packs of 494445 bits at 9.52 GBP incl VAT for a packet of 5, plus 1.95 GBP postage.

All in all, I must say that it looks a bit of a shambles!  ;)  It seems that 3.5mm (and 4.5mm) replacement bits are available, but the price varies from 9.51 GBP incl VAT for five 494445 on eBay, to 92.05 GBP plus VAT for five 491795 from the Festool UK website!  It appears that Festool is changing from one part number and packet quantity to another, and is now selling a packet of five bits for the same price as a packet of one bit, but confusion seems to reign, since it is often not clear whether "Qty 1" means one bit, or one packet of five bits.

I can only suggest that potential customers shop around - packets of five bits for a reasonable price are out there, but trying to make sense of catalogues and price lists seems to be an exercise in frustration. Like Bill, I would be very interested to hear what a dealer has to say on the matter!

Wow Forrest, you get to the bottom of things  :o
How did you find all those parts on the UK web site?
I couldn't find them under the drilling section or the spare parts section.

Glad it was of interest.

The UK on-line catalogue in PDF format is in several parts, as listed athttp://www.festool.co.uk/artikel/artikel_weiterleiten.cfm?id=249

The Drilling and Screwdriving section is athttp://www.festool.co.uk/images/gb_downloads/07_08_cata/1_drilling-and-screwdriving.pdf and the replacement bits can be found on page 17.

The UK on-line price list is athttp://www.festool.co.uk/images/gb_downloads/Craftsmanpricelist_2007-2.pdf

The Festool UK on-line product catalogue for Drilling and Screwdriving is athttp://www.festool.co.uk/mediandoweb/index.cfm?ID_O_TREE_GROUP=1569&sLanguage=EN and if you enter "BSTA" in the search box at the top right you'll gethttp://www.festool.co.uk/mediandowe...ch.php&BEGIN=1&sLanguage=English&KEYWORD=bsta

If you then click on "Spare part drill bit EB-BSTA D 3,5/5x", you'll end up athttp://www.festool.co.uk/mediandowe...UP=3506&ID_O_PRODUCT=211286&sLanguage=English which is the page that shows both the EB-BSTA D 3,5/5x  and the TIN D3,5 F.BSTA. Clicking on each one will show the part number, price, quantity supplied, and minimum order quantity.

Hope that explains things.

Yea, I cant bring myself to pay that for a single, simple twist bit.  I'm waiting for one of the dealers to respond and it it's not a 5 pack I'll head off to my local HW store and buy a few there....and trim them to length with my Dremmel :)

Nor can I.  During my recent trip to Germany, I purchased from Berliner Schrauben GmbH & Co. a set of 19 HSS twist bits (1 - 10 mm in 0.5 mm steps) in a quality made steel indexing case for 21.30 Euros including 19% VAT tax.  That's about US$33.  These seem to be well made and are definitely very precision ground (compound relief angles on all bits 5 mm and larger) and very sharp.

Hey Forrest, You certainly made this an entertaining thread!  Hope it was as fun for you.  Have a great New Year!!!
