Resale Question...

So apparently there's a Phoenix Spring Cleaning event where you can bring woodworking stuffs to sell. I did not know about this until a friend suggested it to me... Anyhow, how do you guys price used Festools? I have 3-4 I'd be interested to sell without the hassle of shipping. Looking at recon selling at -20%, that's a basis. So for my sanders, -30% plus a separate Systainer of abrasives would seem decent, but maybe that's my optic. What does the FOG collective say? And you can DM me if you don't want your reply public.

I also have larger stuff to go like a drum sander, 16" jointer/planer, etc. Some I may bring there, others, I'll bring photos, a copy of the manual, and videos of it working to see if someone wants to come over to see it.

That said, I really don't like people I don't know in some way coming over. It's why my mom's car is still on my driveway costing monthly insurance...

As a seller, I think it’s natural to want to get as much as possible. Most FOG seem to feel that 60% of MSRP is a good spot. I think you could start at the 30% but be open to negotiating.

When I sell stuff, I price it to move. I have no desire to spend a lot of time trying to get top dollar. If I was selling a Festool tool that had many years of use, I would probably shoot for 40% of what I paid. To allow someone to beat me down, I might ask for 45% or 50%. If the tool was gently used and only a couple of years old, I would shoot to get 55%, 60%, or so.

I also base this on how I would feel about buying a used tool from a stranger.

But I know everyone has a different approach to this.

I've usually sold tools at about 50% of retail, but exceptional condition is worth more, and heavier use drops below half, to the point that I've given away tools to friends that might or might not fail at any time.

My biggest concern with buying a used Festool would be no warranty, and a three year warranty is pretty great for a new tool...although I've only had to send one thing back to Festool—my Rotex 125. Festool even covered shipping both ways, which was very appreciated. So, as a buyer I'd be weighing retail price with possibility of repairs.

No seriously, the only tools I have ever sold where the 10.8v/12v series Bosch small drivers and drills. That was just after I got my first CXS. It replaced all of those, so I sold the others to co-workers, that had the same platform.

I have a couple of duplicates (OF1010 and MFK700) that I don't really need anymore, but I just don't know if I could part with them? I guess I still can't get past the "be ready for anything" mentality?

In 2015 I bought a 2009 vintage Kapex with UG cart and extensions in very nice condition for about 55% of then retail price. That was a fair price...I might have been willing to pay 60% of then retail, but no more than that.

Festool tends to hold value a little more than other brands. But for an actively produced tool, 50-70% off current MSRP is about right, depending on condition. Other brands can be 40% or even lower, depending on the type of tool and condition. (A general contractor is going to pay less for a reciprocating saw they plan on beating up than a comission only woodworker will pay for a high end finish sander.)

Also, Festool items no longer made/available in your market can increase in value. See Festool LS 130, CMS, VAC SYS, etc. as examples. Pricing those is a different beast.

Where you sell also makes a difference. eBay sales tend to get higher prices because you can reach a wider audience. FOG classifieds have a 50/50 chance of attracting someone looking for a community discount.

Don't forget to factor in seller's fees. One local woodworking guild near me has periodic sale like you're describing and takes 20% in commission. (They may be able to get higher prices because people can see the tool in person; I don't know). Ebay holds about 14% of total value (tax and shipping) even though your margin starts with base price. PayPal is 3% if you sell direct.

depends on the particular tool. I like to price according to what I would pay? Start at 50% then go up or down by 10% increments. A very clean tool with warranty might go for 70/80% while an older sander might get half the price. If it’s well used then maybe and five years old perhaps 30/40?

I have some worn batteries that still operate so I would probably sell them for $20-$40. $25 is fair so $50 for two. That might get dropped to $40/ pair if they buy a tool in addition to the batteries. At the show walk around and see who’s selling what. Mostly people either own Festool or don’t. The woodworking shows are hit or miss.

Hi Paul,

When I've sold Festool tools on Craigslist, I generally list them for Retail minus 20% or 30%. I've never sold for less than 30% off retail. Yes, sometimes the tools sit on Craigslist for a month, but I'm not trying to make a quick buck. Frequently, tools I'm selling have been discontinued so there's often a fair amount of interest from buyers in acquiring the tools for spares or parts.

I have bought and sold stuff, cash, in front of train stations where neither party knew where the other lived.

Look at the condition and age. If it’s clean and still has warranty 20% - 30% off list. The copy should sell the item.
A) “Bought in november 2024 used one to build two cabinets. Two years left on warranty, mint condition.”
Verses
B) cleaning out the tool shelf “Festool track saw, sanders and green hammer, retiring everything goes, 40-60% off.”
Just be honest and a little fluff helps entice the sale. Everyone wants a deal. I’m of the persuasion that it’s better to make a sale then try to get an additional $20 and 4 weeks of headache calls and emails.
