return brand new MFT table with ding or not?

I got a brand new MFT3 table today. The box had a hole in it, and the rail has a ding. The picture shows the ding.

So far as I can tell, the ding will not hinder operation. I can slide the hinges for the rail past it with maybe just the slightest catch.

I am inclined to keep it unless posters think the table is compromised and I will regret keeping it.

If the table is ok, then I would keep it and be grateful that someone saved me from the shame of being the first to ding it. ;-)

Kidding aside, if you are going to use it, you will ding it up a bit here and there in normal use. Take some time and go over it another time or two and make sure everything important is ok. Fold it up, set it up, calibrate and then break it down.

I'd atleast call the vendor and let them know about the issue. I would be inclined to return it, but that's just me.

Lets face it - sooner or later the thing is going to get dinged and scraped up.

BUT - I WANT TO BE THE ONE WHO DOES IT!

The one nice thing about buying from Amazon - I have no doubt in my mind that if I called them up and said there was a ding in it they would offer me a discount to keep my happy.  (I think they usually allow for up to 10% off for these kind of things)  I would expect no less from any other reputable Festool dealer

You paid a premium price for a premium product.  If your going to look at it and it makes you unhappy, ask for a replacement or at least a discount

I'm a fanatic and if I didn't do the damage it would drive me crazy - it still irritates me to no end when I damage my tools.... I also wipe down and vacuum my tools, where appropriate, before I put them away. I have issues but I know it [big grin]

I would definitely return it or ask for a replacement rail- the discount doesn't make the damage go away [crying]

I just took my mother -in-laws rear tail light and mud flap off tonight to fix her rear quarter panel that was popped out because she backed into a tree. It was driving me crazy - it was damaged for months and she didn't fix it - 45 minutes and all set

I would at least call the supplier and let them know.  Festool and their dealers are great to work with and I'm sure that they will take care of your issue.

I had a similar issue though there was a sharp chunk taken out of one of the corner braces. Spoke to my dealer and they had Festool send me a new one. You'll be able to fix it quick on your own. The MFTs are incredibly well thought out so you can swap in and out pieces. But you should definitely make the call. Good luck!

Paul, if you're not happy with it, replace it or if you don't mind doing it, call the service department and have them send a replacement profile. Probably less hassle than a return, you end up with a spare profile, and you can start using it immediately. Feel free to send me your shipping address and phone number and I'll send you one.

Sorry for the damage.

In my best Crocodile Dundee voice...  "That's not a ding, this is a ding!"

Depends where you got it but take Shane up on his advice. Easy fix for that kind of blemish.

Cheers. Bryan.

I got the table from an online company (not  a tool store), so I doubt I can ask for a replacement rail. The company is very good and will replace it, but I will have to get a whole new table, and I worry that they would ship out the new one in the same box, which was not sturdy enough. The company will give me my money back if I wanted, so I could buy from a Festool dealer.

I just checked to see if the miter can slide easily. It can.

Which online company? If it an authorized company to sell Festool, you might still be able to get the part. If it was Amazon, they have beat up quite a few MFT on this forum.

Good luck... And I would still call Festool about it after you try the seller.

Cheers. Bryan.

If you can get a credit for the damage, that is the way I would go.  I got a dented paper shredder from Amazon once and they gave me a $70 credit.  All is forgotten (literally).  My reasoning was that if they sent another one, that one could have another flaw.  Rather than go round and round the mulberry bush, a credit allows me to live with it very easily.

I'd call Amazon. They are great on fixing problems. They also need to know they have a recurring packaging issue.

Paul, please listen to what Shane said.

He's the forum administrator and a Festool employee. There is no doubt, you don't have to ask for anything because the offer is already on the table and he will do what he said if you give him your contact info. This way you get the replacement rail directly from Festool and not through the dealer. This is normal practice for Festool.

Personally, I wouldn't care about the ding. It doesn't look nice when you get it like this brand new, and if the dealer was around the corner I'd take it back. But when you start to work with these tables, you'll find out you ding it up (and probably worse) soon enough. Going through the whole process of sending it back would be way too much trouble for me for such a small discomfort.

Don't mean to hijack this read although I fully agree with Alex's post up there ^, take Shane up on his offer.

Anyhow, just took delivery of my first MFT/3 (about five minutes ago) and it has a REGISTER NOW! tag on it. Firstly can it be registered and if so how? There is no TNR on the unit.

In NA the MFT is considered a tool, I can't imagine that it is different in your area.  There is a product sticker on it.  I think that it is inside one of the extrusions on the inside (flip it over or crawl underneath it.)

Thanks Peter, I assumed it was classed as a tool but couldn't find the tag. Found it where you said it would be. All registered and good to go  [big grin]

I wouldn't bother, that is mearly a flesh wound.  They are tools after all, tools get used and abused.  They are not shelf queens.

Paul,

I agree with Shane and Alex. As a Festool dealer, I can tell you that the MFT's are probably the most prone to shipping damage - even when double boxed and have Masonite on the sides. Having said that, you have many options - return/refund/ replacement part, but to let you know, of course you  ask for a replacement rail (actually the "profile") from the dealer, who would then have Festool drop ship that profile to you. It only takes a few minutes to swap out and as mentioned, you'd have an extra one on hand if ever one side did get banged up.
