I would like to share my positive experience with Festool’s flagship router: OF-2200 EB. This is biggest, the most powerful, and priciest router currently offered by Festool.

[attachthumb=1]

First I’ll quote some specs:

- Power consumption 2200 watts
- Drive shaft speed 10,000 – 22,000 rpm
- Quick depth adjustment range 80 mm (3-5/32”)
- Weight 7.8 kg (17.2 lbs)

Festool USA currently offers OF-2200 for $800.

The standard scope of delivery includes:

- OF-2200 router
- Systainer 4
- Collet ½”
- Chip catcher
- Dust extraction hood
- Standard U.S. guide bushing adaptor

What is so exciting about this router? That’s not just a router. This is ROUTER within SYSTEM.
OF-2200 was designed as portable hand-held shaper. In addition to that router has close to 100% dust extraction system. Plus it has a lot of accessories. Some of them were designed exclusively for OF-2200 router, some of them like MFS system can be used with any router. Some of them like FS/2 Festool rails can be used with wide variety of Festool tools.

Let start review from handles. Power switch located on the left handle, plunging mechanism lock located on the right handle. So operator keeps full control with two hands and operates at the same time. Another innovation is that handles have 30 degree offset for improving guidance  and for more natural grip position.

OF-2200 has amazing dust extraction system. Router’s base has built in dust Shute. OF-2200 is first router with spring activated moving shroud. Shroud release button located close to the left handle. Simply press the shroud release button and shroud drops into place.

[attachthumb=5]

This router is really chip making machine. Just check out size of chip catcher on the right. I placed chip catchers from OF-1010 (on the left) and from OF-1400 (in the middle) just for showing the difference.

[attachthumb=6]

OF-2200 has magnetic brakes. Electronic step-less speed control dial located on the left side.
[attachthumb=7]

Router has four position depth stop. Two adjustable positions, one fixed position and one special finishing pass position for repeatable and consistent step cutting. Micro adjuster has good graphic instructions for proper rotation.

[attachthumb=9]

Another good feature is one tool ratcheting router collet changing mechanism. This mechanism was introduced first with OF-1400 router, but OF-2200 has head that can be operated from the base side. I suspect that allows changing bits from the top of router table.

[attachthumb=10]
[attachthumb=11]

The most unusual feature is tool less router base replacing system. Router base can be easily removed with just one lever. But Festool improved this function and introduced self centering bushings. Standard U.S. guide bushing adaptor goes with every Festool router.

As extremely helpful add-in I like accessory kit. This kit includes everything what you might need with this router. As you can see it is well packed in Systeiner 3. Festool offers it as metric or imperial.

i am currently quoting a large restaurant reno, where this router would sure come in handy.

i would like to know what people who have purchased this beast, think of it?

cheers, justin.

I will probably come off sounding like I am gushing with love for this tool. My usage is strictly hobby applications. So far, I have only one very minor nitpick detail that bugs me about the router. I was wanting to be able to use it upside down on occasion and use one of the bases as a permanent mounting plate for usage as a second router table. Found the mounting plates have a tiny amount of slop in the mounting and have not persued that idea any further. Jerry Work uses his in this mode and I will play with this some more in the future to try to come up with a tighter mount. The mounting is solid and secure but there is some slight slop in the way the mounting clips work.

I love so many things about this router. It just screams quality. The ergonomics are perfection to me. The power is incredible but so easily controllable and smooth. The start-up with a really large bit is so smooth and makes it far less scary to use. It has a lot of mass - weight - that really helps for hand held control as it does not jump like some of my lighter weight routers. The dust collection is SUPERB!!!! I have used it with tiny 1/4" bits with no issues as well as very large roundover bits and cabinet bits. The speed control is great and helps to prevent burning. I really struggled with the purchase as the price was so high but now I am so glad I did it. I really recommend the kit with all the add-on bases as I have used all but one of them. To me, it seems obvious that this router was designed to be the finest machine of it's type ever - cost not a consideration.

One more thing - this beast is heavy!! It works to your advantage in most applications but if you were for instance doing dovetails and constantly needing to pick it up and set it down, you might get tired of that. This router is an ideal companion to the 1010 and my 1400 sees virtually no usage now.

I agree -- this is one sweet machine!  Something that really is hard to explain until you pick the router up and use it.  The accessories are a must-have IMHO and it is worth getting an extra edge guide too for routing edge slots.  It is so well balanced that the weight has not been a concern for me and this translates into zero vibration and ultra smooth cuts.  This is my only Festool router (although I have used them all in various training classes) and so far it has worked well for everything that I need in a hand-held router and I have held off getting a 1010 or 1400 for now.

This is the best router for large jobs. Ergonomics and dust collection is superb. You have another advantage for this router- CMS. So you can use it as handheld router or table mounted router.  just come to stock dealer and ask to try it. You'll never regret. Router is VERY pleasant to work with.  I don't know how it's priced in Australia, but in the USA accessory kit is a good money saver.  I hope that you'll enjoy it.

I would have most certainly bought the OF 2200 if It were possible, the 1400 is very nice for sure but there's nothing like sheer mass and power for fun routing. I much prefer the handle arrangement and general ergonomics of the 2200. The thing is awesome from top to bottom and every time I read a review I want one even more.

I agree with the others, the OF-1400 is a nice size, but the OF-2200 has fantastic dust collection and more than enough heft to give you great control.  But it's about double the price.  The base kit is a definite yes even though some bases I don't foresee using (I've said that many times before and been wrong).

When my pesky day-job isn't in the way  [blink]  I'm building a vanity for my bathroom.  On a recent episode, I hogged off about 40% of the total volume of two 24"x30" panels: one panel was done with the OF-1400 and the other with the OF-2200.  I filmed them both and put them side by side in the clip so you could see the dust collection.  The blog entry is here for that sculpting episode.

The one nuisance of the OF-2200 is that it doesn't have a Plug-It connector, but it's okay since you really should put it in its own socket (not plugged into the CT).  It's a beast and the beast needs to be fed!

Paul,

I am curious what bases you do not think you would ever need?  So far I have used them all except for the template base (will use it, just have not had to do so yet).  I think that the base kit is the way to go for this and I would strongly recommend adding a second edge guide to the set up for mortises and edge grooves, etc... to keep the machine centered.

I love this thing and it still remains my favorite Festool, with the Domino coming in a close second...

don't get it unless you buy the accessory set that goes with it, in my opinion.

it is heavy, stable, and does anything you want it to do. when you look at the steps
on the progressive plunge stop, the first thing you notice is that there aren't a lot of
them, and they cover a pretty fair distance. this is not a mistake. you don't need a lot
of passes to get a lot done. it'll go part 6/6 oak across the grain in one pass.

i was putting a full bullnose on 5/4 sapele, across the grain parting the wood, so in
effect, cutting two full bullnoses at once. main thing to remember is not to go too slow,
you don't want to burn the wood. it doesn't even flinch.

and if you get an excessive bite as i did, into wood that has a hidden flaw, there is a
loud *bang*, and the router doesn't even twitch, but large shards of wood leave the
area quickly.

heavy, smooth, and the strongest router i've ever seen. can't recommend it enough,
if you have need for a hand held shaper.

if you can stand the cost, there is a lexan lock mortiser for both mortising, and running
anything else by the cutter you are interested in cutting... i was looking at it, and thinking...
you could cut molding with that thing, it appears...

enjoy it. i suspect you will.
