I?ve been wanting a lithium-ion cordless drill for a while, and since I recently embarked on a bathroom remodeling project, I figured it was the perfect time to take the plunge. Having been disappointed with every rechargeable drill I?ve owned in the past because they were too heavy, underpowered, and the batteries were always dead when I wanted to use them, I knew I wanted something that would overcome all of those limitations. I had pretty much decided on the Milwaukee compact lithium drivers until I started thinking about all of the challenges I?d have to face, including running hole saws, working in tight stud/joist bays, driving lag screws in 100-year-old lumber, etc. Adding up the cost of renting the specialty drills I?d need easily tipped the scale in the favor of the Festool T 15 + 3, and I couldn?t be happier.

The drill is simply a pleasure to hold in your hand. No matter which of the interchangeable chucks is attached, the tool is well-balanced and easy to handle. Even with my large hands, the grip doesn?t feel cramped, and the trigger and direction switch hit in exactly the right spots; it?s like it was built just for me!

My favorite feature by far was also the first one I used: the electronic clutch. I?ve grown so accustomed to mechanical clutches over the years, and always hated the noise they make (as well as having to lose the setting between drilling and driving screws). The very affirmative tone tells you in no uncertain terms that you?ve hit your torque setting (and it?s great that the motor stops completely, too). I?ve also found the battery warning tone to be invaluable. Since the tool doesn?t seem to drastically lose power as the battery drains, and with as long as the batteries last in my use, it?s all too easy to forget that they do have to be recharged. Even on busy days, I?ve managed to go hours between charges -- a very welcome change from all my old cordless drills!

And even when it comes time to change the battery, it is also a very pleasant experience. I find most of the ?stick?-style tool batteries very difficult to dislodge, especially with gloved hands. I?ve actually had to use screwdrivers to pry some loose! The Festool battery slides forward on the tool, so it is exceptionally easy to remove and replace, and much more natural than trying to pull the battery away.

Since my project involved replacing subfloor and hanging drywall, I also picked up the depth-stop chuck accessory. While I haven?t yet hung any drywall with it, I can say that it proved invaluable when installing the subfloor. With the exception of the one screw that completely missed the joist (oops!), every single one is set perfectly. It made such delightfully quick work of the task that I almost wish I had more subfloor to install (almost).

While I do have a few gripes about the drill, they are very minor (no belt clip or light). Even with those in mind, I really could not be more pleased with the T 15 + 3. If you?re on the fence about purchasing one for yourself, go for it. You won?t look back.

Mike, welcome to the forum and thanks for participating in our review contest.  I think you did a great job.  Glad you like the T 15 and for bringing attention to the depth stop chuck, which I think is sometimes an overlooked component of the Centrotec chuck system.

Dan Clark did a great review on just the Depth Stop Chuck a couple of years ago if anyone wants to read more about it.

Mike, welcome to the forum! Nice job on the review. When you get a chance to hang some drywall with the depth stop chuck be sure to to let us know how it worked out for you.

You know,  I just went through the same thing.

I just couldn't justify pulling the trigger on the t-15.

I love my festool, and even though I am a new addict, I have 4 tools, TS-55, CT-22, MFT/3, and Rotex 125.  I love them all.  When my Panasonic Drill died a few days ago I was dreaming about going to the store and getting the T-15.  I went in and played with it, but I really didn't love it enough.  Sure, it is EXTREMELY nice, probably the best drill driver made anywhere, but $570 for the kit was and is just ludicrous.

I ended up with the Milwaukee 18 volt hammer drill and Impact driver kit.  It is not nearly as nice as Festool, but for $235 I got both a hammer drill and an impact driver.  Since I use my Bosch 10.8 driver for most screws I figured it was the best choice for me.

Thanks all for the kind words.

I did finally get the chance to hang a bit of drywall on the ceiling using the depth stop chuck, and it was really quite nice. The screws weren't set as consistently as the ones I did on the floor, but I suspect that was more user error, since I know I wasn't always holding the drill perfectly perpendicular to the surface. It was great, though, to have the ability to quickly adjust the depth on the chuck to compensate for the inadequacies of my technique.  [wink] I hope to finally get around to hanging drywall on the walls within the next few weeks, so I'll be sure to update with my experience.

One of the other great pluses of the chuck I forgot to mention in my review is that you're not limited in what type of screw you can drive. A lot of the inexpensive drywall "dimplers" can only drive a No. 2 Phillips screw. That's fine for most drywall screws, but my subfloor screws, for instance, needed a T-25 bit. A quick swap of the bit and you're in business with any screw.

Well, I did finally get my drywall hung on the walls the other weekend, and the depth stop chuck was definitely a nice thing to have. My brother helped me out, and he used to hang drywall for a paycheck. He commented that the Festool solution was nicer than most of the dedicated drywall guns he's used. And I noticed out of all the hundreds of screws we had to drive, only two or three needed to be re-set before taping.

In fact, it was funny watching my brother around all of the Festool stuff we used. He's definitely not a power tool person, but he couldn't help ogling them and saying, "This is so cool!"  [big grin] I may convert him yet...

I've had my T15+3 Set for a while now. I love it. I've been surprised how often the FastFix eccentric attachment and the FastFix angle attachment prove useful.
