Right Angle Adapter for Domino 500 & Domino 700 XL

I have a Domino 700 XL that I use with the Seneca Small Mortice kit.  One thing that I have found challenging is making mortices on the face of a board when making boxes or cabinets.  To get the correct alignment, the XL has to be used vertically with the fence (with the seneca plate attached) touching the edge of the board.  The Festool Domino Support Bracket helps, but is hard to hold on to.

After struggling with this for several projects, I decided to see if I could do better.  I made what I call a right angle adapter for the XL.  It attaches in the same way as the support bracket, but is bigger and has a handle to hold it down on the board.  It has an open part in the middle to allow seeing the alignment marks on the XL.

It works very well.    I have done a set of test mortices, and it is now very easy to hold and position the XL vertically.  I get reliable mortices in this configuration.

See the attached pictures.  It's made from 3/4" baltic birch plywood.  I used a heavy draw pull for the handle, and found some M5 x 25mm knobs to secure it to the XL.  Even put some rubber grommets on the screws like Festool uses on the support bracket to hold the screws in place.

I hope this is helpful.

[member=66813]rmhinden[/member] - our compliments: very nicely executed. This is the right concept in our judgment as you can see from the pictures of TSO's new Domino BigFoot DBF-45 in BETA field testing phase now prior to production release.
Drop us a note with your email and shipping address if you'd like to participate in the BETA testing of the XL version of the our BigFoot.

That's nice Hans...when do you anticipate releasing this item for sale?

[member=44099]Cheese[/member]  - we should probably put  new products like this up on our website to give interested individuals the opportunity to sign up for automatic notification regarding availability.
Actually we are in the third generation of this DBF-45 DOMINO BigFoot design. Based on experience with preceding versions we have added some capability not reflected in any of the images of our product or [member=66813]rmhinden[/member] 's neat shop built version.

In this specific instance I would estimate 90 days days for BETA testing completion and production start up, It always takes longer than we wish. But we have not yest found a way to convert "wishing" into "results" [wink]

[member=10397]Hans[/member] Okay, that is something I would be VERY interested in Hans. I'm about to embark on my kitchen cabinet build (picked up the plywood yesterday) and I'm anticipating a lot of domino cuts that would benefit from this.

Are you planning on a version for the DF500?

How about you make it universal to fit both?

[member=66813]rmhinden[/member] Very nice jig.

Q: From your first picture what hold the two knobs in place?

[member=43644]Gwerner[/member]  - I was not clear enough: we now have a DF-500 version in the final stages. If your project is literally in your shop already, maybe you would like to try one of our full blown BETA test samples that is very similar to the final production version but could send it to you now.
if you're interested, email me your FOG name along with your full contact information and I'll get it on the way to you. The final (I hope) production version BETA samples are due back from anodizing next week and will still need to be finished and kitted - would take longer.

let me know

Thanks!

It's hard to see in the second picture, I made the screw hole a little wider, maybe 1/4" deep, and put a smaller rubber grommet on the screw thread, and pushed it into the recess.  I basically copied what Festool does on the Domino support bracket.

Here is a better picture.

[member=10397]Hans[/member] I would be very happy to try the beta version, thank you! I've e-mailed you my contact info. Please keep in mind that I am a hobbyist and not a professional cabinet builder so my feedback will be coming from that point of view. If that's not the kind of feedback needed I fully understand.

[member=6936]Harry[/member] - excellent point. That is certainly something we'll take a close look at for all the good reasons - THANK YOU for not assuming that we woould naturally try that. Sometimes you're so close to the trees, the forest is not seen  [embarassed]

I'd certainly encourage that Hans.  [big grin]  I'm a fairly regular member of the FOG and I visit your website every 3-4 weeks to see what's new and this is the first time I've heard about BigFoot...let alone the 3rd generation of the beast.  [eek]

[member=233]Bob[/member],

This is a great solution for a problem I have had myself. I will surely make one of these the next time my XL comes out of its home.

[member=10397]Hans[/member],

Having used both a 500 and 700 for this operation I feel like the big foot would provide a bigger benefit to users of the 700. Personally, I think a generic model would be great but I’d bet almost everyone  who buys the Seneca adapters for the 700 would order one of these from you at the same time.

Best,

Reed

[member=63227]Reed Hoyer[/member] - we are working on a BigFoot(TM) to fit both the DF-500 AND the XL. We'll have a progress report in about a week in the TSO INSIDER.
we appreciate all the posts on this thread. Helps guide our development focus in regard to features as well as the general level of interest.

I concur, having an accessory fitting both DF is a huge benefit. Not only monetary but for shop space.... I hate having several jigs that does the same thing  [wink]
