So I didn't see any threads on this . My rotax seems to make a weird grinding sound sometimes when I'm sanding flat and it always makes it when I sand on a vertical surface I guess I'm not sure if this is normal or not? Has anyone else heard this sound?

It's hard to judge the sound like this because we can't hear it, but I think it's normal. I know when I first used my R0150 I was also unpleasantly surprised by the amount of noise it made. I have used many sanders before but I never heard a single one making as much noise as the Rotex. I also did question whether this was normal or not, but I kept on using it and found nothing wrong with it. I make certain to use ear mufflers all the time.

I'll have to say that my RO125 makes quite a racket in Rotex mode, but it shows no sign of overheating, or any condition that would indicate impending failure.

[smile]

I get a periodic 'grinding' noise as well.  While I'm not sure it is the same one you are hearing, it is different enough that the first time I heard it, I stopped the machine because I thought something was wrong.  Now that you mention it, I did notice it more when sanding verticle surfaces.  In my case, not so much on flat surfaces.

Since the noise is not affecting the performance, I just mostly ignore it.  I hope it is a normal sound, or something that lessens over time.

My RO125 is new with about 3 hours total operating time.

Well, rest assured, with the Rotex, nothing lessens over time, and certainly not the sound. [wink]

If any, it gets more. It's just because of the gear mechanism.

That would be fine too as I'm always wearing hearing protection when using the Rotex.  Grind away! [thumbs up]
