I have an RO150 E...an older one with the power cord permanently attached. I've used it mostly indoors under fluorescent lights. So, when I've seen the pad appear to stop turning in “eccentric motion” mode, I’ve assumed that a 60Hz “strobe” effect from the lights caused the rotation seem to freeze and that the pad was actually still turning.
Recently I used the sander outdoors and saw the pad still appear to stop rotating…no strobe effect likely in the sunlight. So, I put on some sturdy gloves and tried stopping the pad by hand. To my surprise, I could stop the pad rotating! With power off, I can rotate the pad by hand easily, although I feel some slight friction. Not so in “Rotex” mode. Glad I tried that mode with the power off!
The pad does rotate under no load in “eccentric motion” mode, and still rotates when I press it lightly on the work surface. And it seems to do a good sanding job, even when it just vibrates against the work without the pad actually spinning.
Does this describe expected behavior or should I ship it off to Indiana for repair? Long out of warranty so I’d rather not waste the time or expense to send them a tool that still works as it should.
