Hello,

Contemplating getting myself a RO90 for Christmas... But I would need it mostly for scribing. Anyone done that? Would I need a different pad?

THX!

Andreas

If you need it most for scribing, the RO90 isn't the tool for the job. You should be looking at the ras 115.04.

Mostly for scribing, I'd think about the RAS.

But would the RO90 work? Probably, depending on what species you're scribing. I've used my RO125 to scribe some poplar jamb extensions and was pleasantly surprised at how well (and fast) it did the job. I truly decided to try it out on a lark, thinking that the RAS was really what I needed to get, and was happy with what the RO could do there.

I asked this question of a couple of other FOG members a little while ago as I probably only a couple of times a year need to "scribe" and as such cannot justify the expense of the RAS.

The opinion seemed to be for small infrequent scribing jobs the RO90 could be used if the hard pad was attached

The RAS seems to be the favoured tool for this job, but maybe the RO90 and the hard pad could be suitable.

Would be interested to know if anyone has tried it?

Andreas, as much as I'd like you to get an RO 90 because it's a fabulous tool, I don't want you to be dissatisfied. I think the comments from other members are spot on. You could use the RO 90 with a hard pad in a pinch but I wouldn't recommend it as your primary tool for scribing.

I have used my R090 for scribing this Tuesday and Wednesday gone.

I used it for doing corian work tops for dental practice down London worked well.

Don't think I would use it for large scribes on timber though!  Need Ras for that I recon!

Try both on the same piece of scrap using the same grit abrasive (Rubin on the RAS and Granat on the RO90) to give both a fair shot.  I think you'll readily see that, as Shane mentioned, the RO90 is a wonderful and versatile tool, and that its dust collection is far better than that of the RAS, but the RAS will work better for you for the purpose of scribing.  And with the right abrasive, you can even sharpen your lawnmower blades with the RAS.

I've been usig the RO150 for scribing.  I too have been thinking the RO90 would be good for this  do to the size and lighter weight.  On the 150 I use the hard pad and 40 gr Cristal  to remove the bulk, then switch to 80 Rubin in randoom orbit mode to finish off to a nice edge. No doubt the RAS would be faster  but the Rotex isn't slow, and gives me a multi purpose job site sander all in one tool. Seems like the RO90  would be even better in that role unless you do scribing regularly.

I have a RO125, RO90 and a RAS.

The RAS is the winner of the bunch by a landslide for scribing.

Now, I have done my fair share with the RO's but, I find the RAS much easier to use vs. the RO's.

The pure rotary motion of the RAS makes it easier to control.

The RO's have a tendency to bounce and wonder sometimes when scribing.

The RAS has to be twice as fast as the RO's.

Right now I'm using my blockplane and beltsander... Will see if the RO90 is as slow as the other method ;-)
