I posted a mention of this in another thread.  The Woodcraft in Roanoke, VA is having a open house and tool demos on October 19 and 20.  Keith, new Festool Regional Sales Manager will be for parts of both days.  We have read here about Woodcraft stores and mixed experiences.  These guys do their best to do it right.

I hope that those who can make it will make it.  I will be there both days (they actually invited me back after an impromptu appearance last year   [eek] [eek]) and if space allocations work out there will be a really cool challenge demo happening.  Who knows, MAYBE there will be another familiar face there.

If the challenge works out, I am required to ask for your assistance.  So stay tuned.  This is cool.

Hope to see some of you there.

Peter

This is going to be a really cool demo of various Festools and it is unpredictable.

I received this message from Woodcraft:

"you have a challenge
you will get 1) 4x8 3/4 plywood and 1) 4x8  1/4 bead board  and a lot of other misc wood that you will not see till you get to Woodcraft
you will have to make some kind of tail gate kitchen that will fit in the back of a SUV (look at the chuck wagons of old)
and you will need to make 2 of them!!
you will have a silent auction for one and the other one will go to the owner of the wood
you have 6 days to get all the help you want from fog
are you game?"

A follow up phone call revealed these additional details:

I will not know the size of the vehicle so I can't do exacting pre-planning.
All power tools must be Festool.  I am allowed to bring my own and use any that they have at the store.
Unless this has changed, I must do all the work in the store and must be willing to stop and explain what is going on to anyone watching.
I can use fasteners such as screws, brads, or nails.

I said yes to the challenge.  I think that it will be fun, it will show the versatility of the whole Festool system, and it won't be pre-prepared.

So, in accordance with the instructions, I need you assistance with advice.  How do you plan the breaking down of materials, which tools to use for which steps, etc?  Are there any special features that would make someone want one of these?

You can do a Google search for Chuckwagon kitchens or here is an image:

HELP!

Peter

Peter,

If it helps, I can give you the measurements of my Lincoln MKX SUV and my wife's  KIA Sorento SUV.  This may give you a rough estimate of an opening for the

opening of a SUV.

Eric

Here's your template. Good luck. A sheet of ply and a sheet of beadboard should do the trick. Maybe a drawer slide, maybe two. [popcorn]

Erock,

That would be cheating, but go for it.

Shane,

Sure am glad you will there to hold the drawer slides on Friday.  [thumbs up] [poke]  Hopefully you will also be there on Saturday.

Tailgaters I need help here unless you really just want me to fail.  [ban]

Yes, there will be picts and who knows maybe even more

Peter

Go big, or go home Peter.

I'm with Shane on you doing the full rig.  I just think you need to add wireless surround sound speakers as well.  And maybe a bigger screen.

Neil.

Thanks Bud! Shane is handling the electronics donation and installation end.

The really funny thing will be about a year from now (I hope).   [big grin] [big grin] [big grin]  I have a member here sworn to secrecy about my next insane project, but there will be verification that the idea / plans were discussed before this thread.  Hmmmmm.

Seeing how both of my SUV's have different size openings.  Plus both of them differ from the way the hatch is angled.  But, with both of the vehicles the

rear set of seats fold down.  I think this is the case for most or all of SUV's.

So I won't give you exact measurements (because every SUV is different) I can give you a rough size.

If I was going to build a box to house all this tailgate stuff and wanted it to fit into both of my cars I would build something that was

28 inches high  x  38 inches wide  x  20 inches deep but with the seats down it could be a lot deeper, but you only have 1 sheet of plywood.  [scared]

Obviously every vehicle will be different.  This will be a little more challenging then I first imagined.  Because while I was measuring my vehicles, I noticed how

different the angle that the hatch opens/closes.  My Lincoln MKX  for example,  If I was to build this to fit the MKX, the top portion of the box would have to

be a lot narrower in depth then the base portion (does that make sense?)  So when I closed the hatch it wouldn't blow out my rear window.

This is a project that is ment for a custom fit.  SO GOOD LUCK PETER!!  And with 1 sheet of plywood.  WOW!

If you need to "cheat" more Peter let me know.  I have no problem taking a tape measure and a camera out to the cars and snapping a couple

photo's for you  [wink]

Eric

Eric,

Upon re-reading the challenge, it does say that I can get "all the help I want from the fog", so I would love some images / measurements.  I suspect that walking around parking lots with a tape measure  and a camera taking measurements and notes of SUV's might raise suspicions for me.

Do you have the address? Im in Ashland/Doswell often and would like to get to one of these events. Preferably without my credit cards  [unsure]

I noticed in another thread that you come down this way - especially "seasonally".

Here is a screenshot of the address.  If you do a Google search for "woodcraft roanoke" you can get to their site and it even has a Google maps link.  That works for most / all Woodcraft stores.

I'm at work now Peter,  but I'll get some images for you when I can.
I'm not sure if I can upload a image from my phone  (Samsung galaxy).

I can try a little later when the sun comes up.

Eric

Might not be  an SUV. Think pickups with tonneou covers or hard shells too in your pre-planning.  Maybe go with a two piece stackable unit?  That way it won't be tall enough to block rear vision in an SUV during transport.

Seth

I think it would be cool to do something modular, P. That way, you could configure it however you want. Think something along the lines of what Ron Paulk did with his mobile workshop.

The telephone call did provide some clarity.  It is for a SUV.  The reasoning was that for tailgaters a SUV is like a chuck wagon of old.  Modular or multi-piece might be good and help with the weight issue when it needs to be removed.

I guess we'll see....   [big grin] [big grin]

Peter

Well sorry it took so long to up load some images for you Peter.  I tried this afternoon on my lunch break with my Samsung Galaxy phone, it no luck.

Here are a couple shots of my Lincoln MKX.    Please let me know if you need more shots or angles.  I hope they are clear enough to under stand where

the measurements are coming from.

I agree that the unit should be modular.  With the different angles and heights of all the SUV's out and about a modular system would be the way to go.

Bigger base for a mini frig, mini micro wave.  Some space for a cable/dish box. A drawer or two.  With a pull out table with two flip down legs.  Then maybe

place the flat screen t.v on the top with some speakers

Do you know what you plan on putting in it yet?

Eric

Eric,

WOW!  Thanks for the picts and more importantly, the effort.

I suspect that it is a smaller SUV but do not know yet.  I don't think that we will be doing tv's, surround sound, or any other electronic stuff.  I think that this will be a "unit" that can be taken out that will offer storage for multiple cooking and food serving items with an emphasis on compactness and space utilization.  Drawers, shelves, pull outs, vertical dividers...

Pete

You could also think about an inventory of what you need for tailgating and go from there:

- storage for a Weber Q grill
- cold storage for a case of beer on ice - a box with a vinyl insert or a pull-out ice chest?
- cooking utensils / plates / cups / etc
- brats / dogs / burgers / buns storage
- assorted tupperware / storage for catsup, onions, mustard, pickles, etc
- cutting board / counter prep area
(I'm thinking the above could make up one or more 'modules that could do in side by side with a base that has a pull-out shelf for cutting / prep area.  Maybe with a hole for a bucket or stainless dish for a 'sink / food prep area' as a drop in to the sink)

entertainment
- speakers that could tie into an ipod / phone for tunes
- maybe a 19" small flat screen tv with a roof hi def antenna
- above could mount on a panel that is inside but toward the back seat and 'above' the storage / prep area
- make it drop down so you can lower it for travel.

I'm thinking some old 'pimp my ride' videos might give you some inspiration Peter.

finishing & hardware
- pick your favorite college colors / logos and order those as vinyl stickers
- maybe formica or corian for the pull out counter
- full extension drawer slides that will lock when opened
- perhaps drop-down legs to that ground the are adjustable to carry the weight of the grill / sink / counter

I'd probably pick a dimension - maybe 42" wide x 24" high x 24" or so deep as as base unit that would fit in potentially most SUV's  Make a pull out from that at the bottom, storage above, the back area with the TV / speaker riser, etc.

I think 1 sheet of ply and 1 sheet of bead board plus some misc other wood could work with those dimensions and a lot of planning.

Sounds like this could be a fun project.
