I’m making a child’s Windsor rocking chair for a great-niece. I’ve always had trouble cutting the slots in the legs to receive the rockers, cutting into maple end-grain. Alignment, chatter, vibration, and chiseling are always a pain.
The rockers are a bit over 10 mm thick. I tried a couple of test cuts with the Domino set at 25mm depth with a 10mm bit. In order to line up the mortise with the other leg, I laid a rule across both legs, and rested the fence on it. I set the fence height to half the leg’s diameter plus the thickness of the rule.
A careful plunge made a nice slot in the leg, with just a little to saw and shave for a good fit. Here’s a picture with my left hand removed for clarity. You can see one of the mortises in the near leg. My apologies for the clutter.
As a sweet bonus surprise, I could put a Domino in the mortise and use it to guide the thin-kerf Japanese saw.
