Perhaps this is a silly question, but I swear the pattern on my Rotex is different after installing the maintenacne kit that came with it.  Since I have had the tool for 4 years and use it mostly on weekends, it is such a drawn out timeframe that perhaps there has been a grandual change that has been reset by the kit - I am not sure.

Prior to my brushes wearing out last week, when I used the random orbital mode and looked at the paper/holes, the pad would shake in the typical tight circle random orbital fashion and the holes would very slowly rotate clockwise.  When I put the pad onto a workpiece, the slow rotation clockwise would stop if I pressed with any kind of firmness and the pad would mostly just vibrate in the random orbital fashion.

I replaced the brushes and the internal seal that goes under the pad (I tossed the old one so I cannot put it back on to check it).  the new seal is definately "softer" than the old one, meaning more plyable to the touch, but the old one was not worn down and there was no dust in the gear housing area.

Now, when I use the random orbital mode, the unit virbates in a tight random orbital fashion as it should, but the paper holes do not really move in the circular fashion like I remember them doing before.  On occassion it will move a little bit clockwise, but not constantly.  When I put the pad on a workpiece however, the pad now really takes on a stronger rotary pattern, but it is not acting in the rotex mode.  if i press harder the spinning of the pad does not stop, it may even increase.

Basically, if I set the unit running on a tape measure, the "kick" or offset by which the pad extended during its random orbit rotation may have been 1/4 inch or so.  Now it seems to be like a good 1/2"  When I am sanding I can feel a stronger pull from the rotation than I remember.  I am wondering if the new softer rubber seal is allowing more movement than the 4 year old seal?

I am really just trying to see if anyone else ever experience this.  As I said, sometimes a tool can change so slowly that you do not realize it until you get a new one, or in this case , replace the old parts.  I did not have any grease on hand when I put the new seal in, but I did scrape all of the grease off the old seal and put it on the new one prior to installing it  - it seemed like enough.  I am not sure if this could play a role or not.  The gears are not touching, I triple checked that there was full clearance when in the random orbital mode.

The unit just feels different and is definately acting different and I am trying to figure it out - it also seemed to have more power from the moment I turned it on with the new brushes installed - maybe that is a factor as well??  Thanks if anyone has any isights!!
