I want to cut some concealed handles for some wardrobe doors and drawers I am making.
  • the 491140 hand rail cutter looks like it would provide exactly the profile I want
  • the catalogue says this cutter is for use with the VS600  (a jig which can be used with the OF1010 or OF1400),  so clearly this cutter must fit & be compatible with the OF1400.
  • I already have an OF1400, ideally I'd like to cut the basic outline out with a straight cutter + guide ring + MFS400, and then recess the cutout using this (hand rail) cutter.

Is it essential to use a VS600?
are there any reasons why this wouldn't work?
or suggestions on how to do it better?

I've only just bought the MFS400, so the Festool accessory budget is tapped out - so buy the VS600, isn't practical

The hand rail cutter is just a router bit. The VS600 is a Dovetail/ finger joint jig.
You should be able to make your concealed edge easily with the edge guide supplied with the router. (I'm assuming you received a parallel edge guide with your router)
These questions are easier to answer if you include where you are located, packaged accessories can vary country to country.
