I have to remove some material from a groove in a cabinet. I have a medium router plane but the task is more for the regular format. I bought the Veritas Router Plane and the cutters are breaking the fibers instead of removing a thin shave like my medium router plane do. I notice the cutter have a pitch that make it bite into the wood drastically. Is that normal?

It's hard to see the cutter from the picture, but believe me the cutter have a serious pitch. I tried another cutter and both have a pitch.

Router plane bladee all lie at a canted angle to provide clearance. They will not cut if flat to the surface of the wood.

It sounds as if your blades need to be sharpened. I developed a system for sharpening router plane blades that makes it easier to do, and will makes it easier to keep them that way thereafter.

Thanks for the reply. I will follow your sharpening technique next time  [embarassed]. How about the spear point blades, do you use a fine file or just sand paper by hand?

I might gotten too aggressive with the spear point blade. I tried later with the straight blade and it was fine.

Thanks again.

Hi Mario. I do not use the spear point blades. I do not have a use for them. They were designed for finish planing, but I find they can dig in and create a rough surface. Besides, the straight blades I use get really sharp and do everything I need.
