RS 300, which image is correct?

Looking at a number of Festool and Festool dealer sites there appears to be two different images of the RS300 1/3 sander but presented with the same technical data and description.

Can anyone explain this, is there an old or new version, or difference in build between the fixed and variable speed?

One thing I can say bud, is the LS is NOT a orbital sander, it is a linear sander, maybe that has something to do with yer search.

The current model of the RS 300, is shown in your bottom picture.

The top picture though seems to be from a sander I haven't seen yet. The size of the pad looks like it's the same as the RS 300, but the picture is so small, I can't see the markings on the side. Perhaps this is a new sander, it certainly is not an older model. This is the first time I see this one, so I can't say anything about it. Wherever you found this picture, it must have been a mistake that they used it, because I don't think that sander is in the stores yet. It is not on any European Festool website. But perhaps the world turned upside down and you Aussies now get the new stuff before the Germans do.

As far as I remember there used to be 2 versions.

One with built in suction (the one with dust bag)
...and one without built in suction (the one with hose).

But I could be wrong. I've never owned one of the Rutscher sanders.  [unsure]

Edit: I think I was wrong! With a little bit of goog'ling I found a variation of the lower picture in Untidy Shop's post where a filter bag was mounted. Hmmm!  [tongue]

The Oz website is a bit confusing eh?!

The top one looks more like an ETS150 body ... I'm 99.99% certain the lower one is what you'll get if you order locally ...

That's for the RS 100, there are two models of that one. Not the 300.

By looking at the links on the Australian website it seems to me the new one is an updated model of the RS 300. There are 3 versions with different product numbers and since all those numbers start with a 5 they're newer models.

Alex, I liked your theory, but the model number on the German site also starts with a 5, and uses the other image, (But from what I can tell, this Kit is different from the kit on AUS site). See description below.

Kev has highlighted the confusion, which can be seen following Alex's links. The feature image beside the main description is different to those sanders in action in the smaller images as you scroll down.

Looking at the images on Festool AUS site, I am beginning to think the variable speed version is presented as the main image, as a speed wheel can be seen at top front of motor housing. But this view is not supported by the image for  the kit version with variable speed on the JustTools site.

So more thoughts anyone?    [smile]

My point is, the numbers starting with a 5 haven't been in service longer than the last 2-3 years. Before that for years all Festools product numbers started with a 4. The RS300 hasn't been updated in years, so if you now see packages with the RS300 starting with a 5, they're pretty recent packages.

Btw, there's a difference between the product number on the sander itself and the product number for the total package. For instance, the package number has been updated when Festool switched to T-Loc systainers, while the tool inside stayed the same.

And I also know how the predecessor of the RS300 looked, that was the RS3 (see below), and this new sander sure isn't the RS3. It can only be an updated model. The current RS300 is a nice sander, but the clamps for non-stickfix paper sucked because the lever was a bit small. The new clamps look a lot better.

Just an update.

I emailed Festool AUS and just received a reply which included -

"The image is incorrect,  we will be changing the image as soon as possible."
