Yes, they were cleaned up with sharp chisels.

FYI for anyone thinking of using Purple Heart, some of it will turn brown as you machine or sand it. That was fun to deal with.

It has a lot to do with exposure to sunlight, much like Cherry darkening. I really have no clue why it's so variable though. I have seen some stay purple for years. I've got a bowl, that I turned at least 15 years ago, still looks the same as day one. It sits in on a shelf in the basement, never seen the sun though.
