I heard a wee while ago that we are bringing out a cordless planer in the not so distant future as in late next year.

Has anyone else heard such a rumor? Or seen anything about what it might be?

People actually "in the know" of upcoming products are usually bound by a non disclosure agreement.

If they did, I suspect they would have to load it down with 3 or 4 batteries to get the amount of current needed for a demanding tool.

No? They managed to do the battery powered vac with two batteries and that takes way more power than a planer. Other brands manage to do a 18V planer with a single battery just fine.

Considering ignoring non-disclosures has become a badge of honor I would say there might be some truth. In the age of Internet many want to be famous for at least a minute. There are people with security clearances who cannot keep their mouth shut about the work they do or worse yet share it.

The cordless CTC MIDI dust extractor is based on MIDI I, which consumes anywhere from 350 to 1200 watts (which is 10A).  The cordless CTC MIDI will not power any external tools, so I can see where two batteries would suffice.

However, a 13" planer will suck a LOT of current.  Dewalt's 13" planer sucks a full 15A (sometimes 20A).  I cannot see how 2 batteries will be sufficient for this.  Maybe if Festool made a 8" planer? lol

oh, after googling, I guess people are talking about small 3-1/2" hand planers, lol.  Though, since Festool has started branching out into bench top stuff (like their table saw), I assumed it was a larger planer.

Festool just took a step back in tabled machines with the discontinuation of the CMS.

Yes, handheld planers.

True. But its run time can be measured in microseconds.

Sure, best in scientific notation to save on the amount of digits.

An uninitiated observer has to wonder what are physicists doing on a woodworking tools forum ... well, the same as the physicians.
