Maybe it's me

But don't you guys find sanding therapeutic. Just done a big panicky messy glue up using a PU glue it foams up in any gaps and goes everywhere

Me .my bench my clamps and saw stools are covered  in it

Its so nice to take all the clamps off and have a good clean up. Scrape of all the foam
put everything away

Then put a nice new 60 granat disk on the RO125 [attachthumb=2][attachthumb=1]then an 80 then a 120 .

Was so pleased then to see I've actually created something rather than a mess

Nice work and yes the sanding/clean up is therapeutic.

I am curious as to why you'd use PU glue over a quality PVA like Titebond 2/3?

To be honest I've never tried titebond. I've always had good results with PU I just thought it was better than PVA

But I am getting fed up with the mess of PU

I will get some titebond and try it. All you guys on fog use titebond

This is an exterior job (my New Front door) so thought PU was the best option

Titebond 3 would be a good choice for outdoor work. Tests show it to be superior to PU.

Titebond glue is way to go for me and no, I don't find sanding therapeutic only at times necessary.  If you want therapeutic, try hand planing with nice paper thin shavings without any tear out.

I'm not sure what disease or mental issue sanding would be "therapeutic" for.  [huh]

I've tried to find the zen in sanding, but all I experience is mindless toil!  Festools DO make it more tolerable, but it's still a task that doesn't excite me....or cure any ills! [big grin] Music helps.

Cheers,

Frank

Frank, you're missing the point of Zen, which is to become aware mindlessly.

I agree with you VW MICK.  I also find sanding therapeutic and calming.  I find carving to be the same.  It helps to have an excellent sander so you can lose yourself in the task at hand and not have to fight the equipment constantly.  I wonder if the hum of the sander can be relatable to the same type of repetitive sound as someone who's doing transcendental meditation?

Even so, I don't like to sand for overly excessive periods--my kids are pretty good at interrupting whatever zen state i might get into.

To be honest I was never so keen before I discovered festool sanders and granat/Rubin paper

Listening to my old dewalt or Makita palm sander screem with a
crappy roll of paper you have to stop and cut to size every 5 mins

I never found that therapeutic defiantly a chore to be avoided

I've been sanding for two hours already this morning... with at least another two to three hours to go.

My back is KILLING me, my tennis elbow is coming back, and all I want to do is FINISH!

No zen! Just pure, suffering boredom!! [mad] [crying]

Cheers,

Frank

PU is good for wood projects when you need the glue to expand to fill gaps. I've used it on pressure treated box planters and fixing misc outdoor wood projects. This is different then using Titebond for outdoor projects with tight wood joints.

PU does fill the gaps but, it does not add any strength to the joint as the foam just expands and fills the void.  If you want a good gap filling adhesive use epoxy with fillers.  West Systems sells additives to use as gap fillers and the whole joint is structural (and waterproof).

Here is a link to the West Systems manual that gives a lot of joint information.

I do find sanding therapeutic.  There's something hypnotic about the back and forth motion, back and forth motion, back and forth... I am getting very sleepy...
