Has anyone had any experience sanding stainless steel to get all of the surface scratches off? I have a large bbq that needs to be re-furbished.

One of the issues with sanding stainless steel is that from the factory it tends to have a pattern or scratches typically in a straight line.  Of course any orbital or random orbital sander rotation is involved.  I don't remember anyone mentioning it, but if you had a LS-130 and ran it in the "grain" direction you might be able to feather it in.

Search for "stainless steel" (including the quotes) and you should find a few other threads discussing sanding stainless steel.

Thanks Peter. All start searching.

Recently I had a counter top made for a client. At the metal shop talking with the guys there  the brush effect cost more they said Random orbital with a scotch brite pad.
It came out great flat in sheen and easy to repair.
Not sure how that would go with your BBq.
Have a great day

I clean my grill with Super Clean Tough Task degreaser, RO 90, and a Vlies disk. It is the only thing I've found to get the grime from frying off easily.

Stainless surface finishing is accomplished professionally with conditioning belts using either a band sander or a drum like finisher with either conditioning sleeves or flap type drums.

Is a good tutorial if you want to maintain the original scratch pattern.
