Sanding to a scribe line with the RAS 115 sander

Dan,

For some reason most of the 5/8-11 will thread the RAS as long as it isnt made in China. Its not a perfect fit, but once the cup seats flush with the body of the RAS your good to go. I know most might hesitate to do so, but Ive been doing it for several years now and still have no problem threading the festool backers back on the RAS. If youd like I can post pics and the models of all the cups and backers Ive found that work. Most of what I buy for stone comes from http://www.masterwholesale.com/

Jeff, You may have been getting away with it but I would recommend against this practice. There is only .020" overlap of thread engagement on diameter and this is only under optimum conditions. This is probably why you cannot get the Chinese versions to work, but they are the canary in the coal-mine here. Just because you have been getting away with this doesn't mean you should continue. The .010" per side thread engagement equates to the thickness of a playing card.

I have no problem with adapters, but I think even here it would make the most sense for the adapter to be between 14mm and 7/8 threaded tools. This allows sufficient space for the adapter to acually have some mass between the theads.
