I'm thinking about getting a sander and am curious what sand papers people use. I read over the thread about abrasives, but I'm still kind of confused, and a lot of the messages there predate granat.
For bare wood starting at 80 or 100 grit and going up, it seems that rubin would be the normal choice. But at a certain point rubin overlaps with brilliant. How do I choose between brilliant and rubin? There doesn't seem to be much information about this. Does brilliant produce a nicer finish at the same grit compared to rubin?
Granat is described as being a stearated paper, which means it is presumably not best for bare wood. But people seem to be using it on bare wood anyway. Are people finding that it outperforms rubin and/or brilliant?
After the wood is sanded and I apply finish I'm wondering about scuffing and smoothing between coats of finish. Would this be best done with granat? Platin? Titan? I often work with shellac, which tends to clog sandpaper and corn quickly. The 3M FreCut Gold paper works with shellac, but the Mirka stearated paper doesn't work very well. Has anybody sanded shellac with festool papers who can comment on their suitability for shellac?
I often rub out finishes with #0000 steel wool or with plastic pads that say 1500 or 2500 on them. Would Platin be the right choice for this?
Does anybody recommend using the "interface pad" or the supersoft pad for either sanding bare wood at 150-220 or for sanding between finish coats? When are these pads worth using?
