Sapele and hard maple end table

Several months ago, my son and daughter-in-law to be, asked me to make a matching Makore end table for one I had made about 5 years ago.  This is to be a wedding gift for their upcoming marriage.  As luck would have it, my supplier no longer carried Makore so I chose Sapele and used a dye mixture to match the color (not an easy feat given the table is about 350 miles away).

With the exception of the #8-32 screw to attach the drawer knob, I designed and constructed this table 100% metric and am now a complete convert.  Sorry imperialists, but metric is mathematically much easier.  Dominoes were used for the joinery.  I posted a video several months ago on how I tapered the legs and it is posted in the thread Tapering Legs without a Jig

The table is now finished and this is the result:

Very Nice Steve, I'm sure that they will be happy with such a beautiful piece of furniture.

Very nice!

Matching color is a PITA even it's right there to copy. If you can do it from memory, a picture, or whatever, you are the king!

I'm glad my wife wasn't looking over my shoulder when I saw this, Steve.

I could be "on the hook" for even more that I don't have time to handle?

Great work! I really like the tie-in to your video about tapering legs.

I also would like to "fire the Queen" forever. I should have some cool gear to help our Brethren on this side of the Pond do "exactly that" soon. Those Swedes are really quite clever...

I actually guessed based on a scrap of Makore I had in the shop.  I made 4 sample boards of the Sapele with different mixtures of dye and they took them back after a visit.  One of them was a near perfect match so I either have skill or luck (I know it is the later but I can always dream) ;).

Very nice job. Did you hand cut the dovetails?
I used a Leigh D4 dovetail jig for the dovetails.

I am sensing another order soon.  [laughing]

Awesome table Steve!

Tom, what's the new toy??

There are a few in the pipeline...

I'll start a new thread when I have them in hand or at least on a plane headed here. This is Steve's thread and well deserved!

Steve, I just got the Leigh VSR for my D4 jig and it works pretty well.  Not sure if you use one on if you use the Festool router cutting dovetails.

Jack,
I purchased the VSR and used it on this project for the first time.  It worked very well with a PC 690 router.

The VSR works well with the OF 1010, too.  I use two CTs right now.  Too lazy to get a "Y" connector.

Well done! A work of art.. ;)

And Sapele is a very nice timber to work with

Steve,

While making some boxes with my VSR I noticed a little bit of chips and dust so I used a back-up board as suggested (guess I should have read the instructions) and while the dust and chips diminished greatly I found that 27mm hose for my CT22 was clogging at the reducer on the VSR.  I have a 36mm hose coming to open this choke point.

Sapele is a  good substitute for the more expensive Honduras Mahogany which is getting is short supply.  I have made some cabinets with a mix of both woods and they compliment each other nicely.
