Hello everyone,

after a lot of projects for family and friends, it was time for a self benefitial project. The original plan was to build a table top out of robinia (I hope thats the correct word for the german "Robinie" oder "Akazie"). Unfortunately the timber retailer had only robinia on stock that couldn´t be turned into the table top of my dreams; but they had some great looking satin walnut (red gum) timber (just arrived from the US and even in rough state super cool grain pattern).

So here´s my small picture series of building a table top out of satin walnut. I will attach stainles steel legs to it.

Hello Robbie,
Welcome to the FOG!    I really like how you angled the sides of the top, adds a design twist that definitely has a benefit, no sharp edge on top.  I made a similar large table way back in high school and left the edges square and too sharp, brother and I were wrestling around one day and bonk!  3 stitches later, his forehead was fixed, cherry table undamaged..... [eek]

Those are live edges- I think.  Unfortunately, you only find such material at specialty mills in the States.

What an absolutely fantastic looking top!  The live edge adds so much character.  I look forward to seeing the contrast of the stainless legs.

Yes Robbie, please post some pics with the legs too, stainless legs will look cool.
Mo,  I know it's a live edge but certainly cleaned up and worked to keep the edge angle, it's difficult to keep looking natural once you start messing with live edges, just meant he did a good job.  Both Woodcraft and Rockler carry live edge samples here in Seattle so I would think any close to you would carry it.  Craigslist ALWAYS has someone selling some on the outskirts of town here too, it's really not too hard to find, prices of course vary greatly.

Looks  good.
A lot of options when it comes to  live edge  table slabs...https://goo.gl/wMYrl8

It requires a certain type of client  to appreciate furniture  like that. Preferably one with deep pockets. lol
How  much do tables like  that  sell for?  Probably  depends on the maker. A weekend warrior V  an established  artisian  can prove a large  price  command difference.

Have  four huge  cherry  slabs  about  4m x  0.5m  with lively  edges  that came from  a  closing down sale  by a large furniture  manufacturing company  that went bust. Still deciding  what to do with them.  :-\
Seems a shame  to  down size  timber  of that calibre.
