Saving dryer anti-static sheets

I toss a couple of those scented anti-static sheets in with each load of the dryer.  They work well.

Afterwards, I save the spent dryer sheets.

These work better than any made-for-the-application eyeglass polishing sheets.  (Note:  Only used the spent sheets.  The unused sheets are not suitable for this.)

Aside from the fact that these spent sheets work so well in polishing the glass, they are free and are being recycled for this purpose.

These sheets are made from non-woven fabric of uncertain fibers.  I have no idea why they work so well.  They work better than microfiber clothes.

The other day I found another use for these spent sheets.

I made a small picture frame shelf and had applied three coats of wipe-on poly.  I sanded between coats with 400 wet or dry.  But after applying the third coat, I wanted to eliminate the small amount of dust nibs without altering the appearance.

I had some 600 grit and I tried that on a sample but it altered the gloss level.

I then tried rubbing the piece out using the spent dryer clothes.  These had just enough friction to remove the dust nibs, but did nothing at all to the surface appearance.

Since I have a renewable source for these dryer sheets, any new application is welcomed.

Has anyone else any uses for these?

Note:  If you let your vacuum suck up an un-used dryer sheet it will infuse the room with that scent.  I don’t particularly like the smell of the sheets I use, so I don’t use them like that.

When using dryer sheets just remember to check the lint filter screen every 6-9 months for it starting to plug up. It may be difficult to see but look at the screen from a sharp angle to see if the screen is plugging up. A soap and water bath will remove the residue.

Another use for dryer sheets unrelated to woodworking is stick one or two under the dash of your tractor. They keep the mice from nesting in there and they won't chew on your wires over the Winter.

It's worked on my JD and New Holland tractors for a couple years now. Three years ago mice ate the wiring on the TC25 and I had a mess in the spring when I went to mow the field. How do I know it was mice? I caught the buggers in there when I opened it up to figure out what was wrong. Two of the SOBs when running when I pulled the instrument cluster out of the dash. I spent a half hour digging out all the junk they had packed in there for insulation over the Winter.

Would probably work for your lawn tractor or any vehicle that sits still for weeks at a time too.

What is the mechanism that keeps them away?  Mice sneak into my basement. I wonder if strategically places sheets will keep them at bay. New or used sheets?

My neighbor spreads about 10-12 of them inside his classic car every year when he stores it to thwart the mice. It's worked well for him so far.

Here's some damage they caused just over the short winter months on a motorcycle and an automobile.

They're good for cleaning safety glasses.

Add 4 of the Fleecy dryer sheets to an Old Windex Bottle.. fill with water and use that for Bug remover on your car/truck. It works Amazing well

The spray... just spritz the water/ dryer sheet mixture onto the Bugs and just a light rubbing on the fresh bugs and there gone.
Leave the sheets in the bottle for a couple days before using it.. the mixture in the bottle will get a cloudy look to it

I just looked it up.  The sheets are made from non-woven polyester.  The basic softening agent is stearic acid and various compounds of fat.

Nothing in that description tells me why it works as it does.

There are all kinds of doomsday warnings about using the sheets.  Apparently they will assassinate you while you sleep.

(I also read that cranberries will do the same.  And yet, here I am…)
