I sent several Forrest Blades & some Festool Blades to Forrest for sharpening & they are sending the Festool Blades back un sharpened. They didn't want to to them, said they ruined a $1000 grinding wheel. I'm bummed, I was hoping to have all nice sharp blades to start a project. Has any one else had problems getting their Festool blades sharpened? Any place near NH that you've had good luck with?

Well, it would have been nice if they told you that up front before you paid the shipping to send it out.  Their website clearly states they accept all makes of carbide saw blades on their prices page.  Thanks for the heads up!

Clearly I am blessed to have been using LA Grinding to do all of my metal working tool sharpening and custom grinding for the past 50+ years. They have set the standard, establishing the state-of-the-art, using CNC sharpening machines when those are appropriate.

Back in 1959 when I opened my first large woodworking shop closer to my home in Pasadena I used a marvelous fellow who worked by himself sharpening woodworking blades and bit. His tiny shop was close to my woodshop. In that area his reputation was outstanding. He used a minimum of technology because he had so much experience and became 'at-one' with the bits and blades. Of course back then carbine tips were just becoming practical in woodworking. Unfortunately he died about 1980.

So I asked LA Grinding if they sharpened woodworking blades. They assured me  they had been doing so for a long time. That was when I started using them for all my tool sharpening. The day I was making up my mind to buy my first Festool TS55 I phoned LA Grinding to see if they would deal with those blades. They assured me they had been sharpening Festool blades for the major movie studios for a few years.

Many times I have written that to be successful in business you need to become virtual partners with your key vendors. When I was a kid my Apaw taught me how to set my saw blades and hone my chisels and plane irons. So when I needed to source my sharpening I felt I could recognize dedicated talent. This is how I feel about LA Grinding, which actually is located in Burbank. I know my primary plywood and hardwood vendor knows their business better than I do, so I feel a bond with them.

As for one blade maker refusing to sharpen a competitor's blades, IMO that is nuts. If they do not understand why Festool blades are designed they way they are, then they are far behind state-of-the-art. What do they mean "We sharpen all blades"? To me they are saying "We sharpen all blades we know how to sharpen and we have no interest in buying modern equipment and learning how to us it to sharpen state-of-the-art blades".

why couldnt they sharpen a festool blade?

mine need sharpening soon. i actually need a fair few sharpening. one off my ts55 and then others for my circ saw and my mitre saw. apart from the festool ts55 blade the others are dewalt series 60 and series 40 blades and a 80 tooth bosch blade for my mitre saw and a couple of dewalt circ saw blades of various tooth counts.

the local sharpening place to me is next to useless. think the fella that sharpens them turns up for work once or twice a week for a few hours. may consider uk mail order as a last resort if i cant find a shop in driving distance

I thought I would post this for anyone in the Akron/Canton - Cleveland Ohio area.
I had some Festool blades (TS55) sharpened by Cammel Saw Company and was extremely pleased with them.

They use state of the art equipment and they have a one week turnaround.
Interestingly, I had cleaned up the blades before taking them there and they told me it really was not necessary as they ultrasonically clean all blades before starting.

For those in the DC Metro area, there's

Eversharp Machinery LLC
4814 Hollywood Rd.
College Park, MD 20740
(301) 345-6189
Sharpening Service
Hours 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the service that local Woodcraft franchises use.

Sounds very strange....  I have had some of my ts55 blades sharpened by Forrest at least 3 times.  The cut of the sharpened blades are fantastic.   I don't think they could be considered incompetent in modern blade sharpening but surely something was amiss.

Ask a local cabinet shop where they get their sharpening done.

What Forrest said just doesn't make sense.

I have had my ts55 blades sharpened many times and they always come back good as new.

I would be curious if anyone knows where they can get Festool TS 55 blades sharpened in Canada...more specifically in Winnipeg, MB.

Fin,

I don't know where you are in the North East; but I get all my blades sharpened here

Leitz make the Festool blades, so I think they know what they're doing  ;)
Think I'm paying around £12 a blade and they are perfect when they come back.

trouble is hes hardly ever at work. like once or twice a week. if that. and last time i had a circ blade sharpened he reakoned he had changed angles on the blade. it was blunter when i got it back than it was when i gave him it lol

edit:- lol missed ya price part cheers mate

+1 for Burns Tools.  I've been sending them packs of 55 and Kapex blades for years.  Great service, fair pricing.

Where is burns tools located?  I need a bunch of blades sharpened and have had terrible luck with a local service.

Tiverton, RI.  I usually ship 4-5 55, and 2-3 Kapex blades from Chicago for about $15-18(shipping only). Total turnaround is usually about two weeks.

I'm fortunate to have a bunch of blades, so the back and forth shipping time isn't a big deal for me.

Anyone know of a trustworthy blade sharpening service in the Atlanta, Georgia area that will sharpen Festool blades?

I just received My blades back from Forrest and the 2 Festool blades had stickers that Said "ALL Non-Forrest Festool Kapex Sawblades are being returned NO WORK DONE due to Erratic uneven tooth spacing which causes Mis-Grind on OD"
I've had extremely good customer support from Forrest and find their blades to be the best I've had. I've also had good customer support from Festool, and probably wouldn't buy any other brand. I have 8 of their tools & the only 1  I'm  not wild about is the Kapex but it fits nicely on the bench because it's shallower than the others.
Even though Forrest  said they didn't sharpen them it looks to me  like they tried.
THANKS for all responses,

I think the "erratic" tooth spacing is by design.

The "erratic" spacing of the teeth in various Festool blades is a vital design element.

For the past decade this has been a feature of many modern saw blades.

It blows my mind that a firm advertising as a sharpening service does not understand why saw blades are designed this way but lack the modern equipment needed to effective sharpen said blades.

dunno what they mean by erratic spacing?? not actually looked at my ts55 blade too closely but i thought it looks just like any circ saw blade
