So I've just picked up a nice new sys 1 with the coloured pots inside and I want to get some decent multi purpose screws to fill it with.  Is there a brand or type that people would recommend for general woodwork, as well as light construction and home improvement jobs?  I've come across Spax here in the UK but other than that am not sure.

Any thoughts, as always, appreciated. And you can keep your smutty jokes regarding the subject heading to your selves.

Screwfix have a great selection.

It will depend entirely on the application - hardwood/softwood/MDF, interior/exterior, appearance (brass/silver...)

On Screwfix's site they have a screw selector which should help narrow it down a bit:

http://www.screwfix.com/cats/A231354/Screws/Interior-Wood-Screws#

and then click the link for "Choose the right screw".  I printed it out and laminated it to go on my workshop wall, but then I am a bit nerdy!

FWIW, I use Goldscrew plus more than anything else.

Good luck,

Andrew

I use the Screw-Tite ones - they're available from Screwfix as well as independents. Probably very similar to Spax, but a bit cheaper.

You can use them in chipboard, MFC and MDF without piloting (with the 3.5's - the 4's are a bit big & do cause slight splitting). The larger sizes can be fixed into stone/brick/concrete without plugs, but obviously you would need to pilot those!

Their website isn't great, but there is some info on it Here.

spax are good or reisser , if you have a Howdens near you open an account there they are very cheap for screws.

Yeah Spax are one of the best screws!  The PZ2 pozi bits fit them perfect  and with the  tips having like a cutter on them and the head has a counter sink on them makes them very good screws.  They often dont need a pilot hole and are very easy to screw into wood even hard wood so using less power on your drill so you can screw more screws in.

Other brands do the same type of screws.

BRILLIANT not cheap tho.  I went focus once though and they where selling them for like ?1 for a box of 50 screws which is cheap but funny thing was when my mate bought 3 boxes the woman behind the till said 30p please I was like what!!  They only cost him 10p a box they must of put  the 1 on wrong side of the . when they put the screws into the till system. So I ran back to get some more but there where no more left!! SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think GRK's are avialable over there.

If they are, that's what I reccomend.

They can be used in anything anywhere.

Been using them for the last 4 years and I love them, way better than spax.

Best screws, hands down.

They get my vote as well. I bought a TurboGold case from Screwfix. It has many types of gold screw inside. They're the best I've used so far. I generally drill a pilot hole into MDF anyway. I've read too many warnings about MDF breaking. I need to try those screws without a pilot hole on some scrap just to really see if they do self-tap successfully.

Spax are the bees knees. You can get a mixed pack from Axminster, might fill  your sys 1.

Thanks for all your advice, guys. I'll spend a happy hour or so this morning looking at everything you've recommended.

I use standard gold screws for everything.  They work just fine but don't pull themselves into m.d.f  I only pay about .95p for a box of 200 x 4 x 40mm.  No big deal to pre-bore m.d.f IMO.  Rarely have any break on me.

I really just can't help myself, if your looking for "screwing" advice, I don't think this is the forum you are looking for. :)

Mac,

http://www.mcfeelys.com/

They sell many brands including the McFeely brand. Excellent quality and price, I suspect even considering the UK shipping. SPAX makes a "good looking" screw, but have never tried the square drive (of which I am sold) in the "combo" head. Anyone with feedback on that? If nothing else McFeely will give you an idea of what makes for a good screw. Hope this helps
