Good Afternoon,
We're off to an exciting new month for the tool contests!  If you have a great idea you've been saving for just the right moment to post, maybe now is the time!

This month's categories:
Any project posted in the Member Projects board or the Jigs, Inventions, Tool Enhancements board is eligible.

This month's prize:
RTS 400 sander or a DTS 400 sander (choice of winner).  The winner will be announced on October 1.

This month's Judges:
Rob McGilp
Matthew Schenker

We are looking for another judge or two, so if anyone wants to volunteer, please let me know!  It's fun being a judge.

For a refresher on the basics of the contest, click here.

Everyone, please use this space to discuss your favorite project and what you like about it.  Judges will also weigh in once in a while with their opinions.

Stay in touch,
Matthew

Good Afternoon,
To encourage even more participation, we're now including tool reviews in the monthly tool contests.  This will allow a greater diversity of members to get involved.

The same concepts apply to reviews as we have had for projects: good written details along with photos to illustrate your points.

You don't have to specifically apply to the contest.  Any tool review posted in the Tool Reviews section is automatically entered.

Everyone, please jump in and tell us what your favorite projects are for this month's contest!  Browse through the tool reviews and members projects, and create a list of favorites!

Thanks,
Matthew

Good Morning,
Why is everyone so silent this month?

Come on -- jump in here and share some ideas of projects you'd like to see win this month.  Or post your own project to enter!

Remember, winners can come from the following three area of the forum:
Tool Reviews
Member Projects
Jigs, Inventions, Tool Enhancements

So take a look through these areas of the forum and write down yoir favorite three or four projects.  Then we can discuss it here and come up witih a winner.

Maybe this month we can try to come up with a winner without offline judging?  Do you think we could reach a consensus about a winner through public discussion?  It's worth a try.

Stay in touch,
Matthew

Overtime,
Thanks for putting together a list of your favorites for this month.  I also like those.  Now let's hear from others what they think, and see if we can find a winner for this month in the next 10 days!

I don't think tool reviews should be included in the contest.  The creative use and results from using Festools displayed here gives plenty of choices.  imho  :)

I wanted to at least give it a try.  Maybe including reviews won't be a good idea in the long run.  But my thinking is that, for a lot of people who are new to Festool, or new to woodworking, reviewing a tool may be a better way to share their ideas.  It's a way of getting more people involved in the forum.

Let's see how it goes.

I'd like to try picking a winner this month without offline judging.  But we need to hear from more people to make that happen.

All right, let's hear it everyone!

Stay in touch,
Matthew

Frankly I was blown away by the Porch Railings project!  It get's my top vote for projects.

In the tool review section, I think Roger's review of the JointMaker pro would be high on my list - not sure if it qualify's.

Thanks for the input on this month's contest!  That's the kind of post we need to make the contest work.  The whole idea here is to encourage people to use the tools, and capture their work for all to see.

I agree -- the Porch Railings project is excellent.  I assume you're talking about Mike Chrest's project?

I'm really proud of Roger's JointMaker Pro review, and the connection I was able to form with Bridge City is one of the highest moments this forum has ever experienced!  However, for this contest, we need the projects to be Festool-specific.  I hope Roger understands!

Let's hear from more people about favorites for this month's contest.  Over the next five days, we should have several good candidates, and then we can choose finalists.  Again, I'm trying to see if we can succeed without having offline judges.

But we need more people to jump in and tell us what they think!

Stay in touch,
Matthew

In response the Matthew's suggestion for this month's contest, I would like to nominate one of my own projects.  I know that the children?s ?full size? log building kit has received consideration in past contests but has not won.  Here is a link to the thread:http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=3551.0

I believe that the project has merit for a number of reasons:

-The project is quite different than any other that I have seen described.

-Festool tools were used extensively throughout.

-I described and illustrated the project through all the steps -including the reactions of children who have built with it.

-The project makes extensive use of recycled material.

-The thread describing the project has drawn a lot of interest (it's in the top 5 viewed projects).

-My grandchildren helped to design the kit (and are still adding suggestions for new parts).

-The project is open ended and new parts can always be added as they are conceived.

-Kids love to play with it.

Frank,
Thanks for posting!  Your log building project is certainly a contender!

All right, we are starting to put together a good list here.

Keep the ideas going everyone.  We only have six more days to pick a winner!

Gotta say, there's some great stuff this month.
I particularly like Mike's Porch railing. The detail and painstaking work leave me lost for words (most unusual) ;D. It's great to see so much construction detail information as well.
Also like 10 digits Entertainment centre and Steve's Display case. Simple lines and great proportions.
Also have to say that I'm a solid timber man, like to see people working the wood for its character and qualities.

Regards,

Rob

Hi MM, the tables are beautiful, but I would have liked some info on their creation.

Rob

Hi guys, sorry I haven't been around much. Work has me burried right now. I'm building another humidor, a jewelry box, a cabinet humi, my off road business is booming, stereo business is rocking and I'm just getting beat. I'll be posting some new stuff soon. Probably next month. Don't forget my work that I had to put in my Gallery. I don't know how to put it in projects. I'll figure it out with the help of you guys next month. Good luck to all my friends.

Hey Rob,

The post that MM referred to was one of several that covered the design and building of those tables and footstool. You can read a bit more about their creation here:

And while I'm advertising myself, how 'bout that review of the famous Festool TS-06?http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=3829.0

By the way, thanks for even considering my work!

I would like to nominate Pedro for his matched set of furniture.  The design is clean and flows very well from one piece to the next.  The fact that he built these in an apartment demonstrates his resourcefulness - especially in NYC where getting materials delivered is an adventure.  One of the 400 model sanders would be a worthy prize for such a well written and pictured project.

Good Morning,
Thanks to everyone who added their voice, and their projects, to this month's contest!  I'd like to hear from more people in the next contest, but I think the general idea of having the discussion take place publicly is good.  I like having members propose their favorites, and then have judges use that member-created list to pick a winner.

Excellent point.  I assume you are talking about this project.

Rob McGilp and I are looking over the projects proposed by members here in this discussion, and we have to make a decision today!

AND THE WINNER IS...

Yet another month where lots of projects were worthy of the prize!  After close examination, and lots of thought, the winner this month is Frank Pellow's child's log building kit.

Frank will receive his choice of a RTS 400 sander or a DTS 400 sander.

Let me add that Festool has requested that photos of winning projects be allowed to appear on the Festool Web site.  Of course, that's up tp Frank and Festool to work out, but I really think the contests are a terrific way to help everyone -- FOG members, the FOG itself, customers, and the company.

Congtratulations to Frank!

Matthew
