Setting Up A New Shop

As ya all know Im getting a new shop built. Its getting toward completion. Thanks for all your help going through the build cycle with me.

Now Im going to be in this boot for about another 3 weeks or so. I thought it would be a good time to discuss the shop.

Im going to start with building a miter saw station first. I have a Kapex, a Kapex MFT, the old style Kapex extensions.

What Im thinking is going with the latest thing which is just using T tracks with stops instead of a fence. Im thinking a 6' track on the left side and a 4' track on the right. Not sure if I want to use the Kapex MFT or not. I got plenty of things I can use it for.

I have a dedicated CT22 for the station. Id like a place to put a trash can to throw the cut offs. Single top drawer for each cabinet to put accessories. The top was going to be 24 " wide so it can be used as a work bench to and have 20 mm dog hole in it. Some Systainer storage. Upper cabinets for misc stuff.

Other thoughts, Since I got the STM and the GRS w the 3 different sized PGs Im thinking of doing what Bent did and put my 3 MFTs next to each other to use as a assy table. Ill mount both heads of my vacuum clamps and store my 4 sanders, sand paper, conturo/ accessories, My 500/700 Dominos with dominos sustainers all under the tables as a assembly station.

Im guessing thisis a good start for discussion.
So what ya all think?

I personally like my Systainers in pull-out drawers - either home-made or Sys-AZ type.  Definitely makes them much easier to access without having to pull them out every time you need a tool.

So you could make a base and put your 3 MFTs on top of them, or build a ‘chaos wall’ for storage, or do under-counter similar to what I did with my Kapex station.

I’ve done my mitre station similar to your idea. Haven’t put the T-track in yet but that’s the plan.

Built systainer storage in SYS-AZ under drawers in a narrow cabinet so as not to waste space behind systainers under the mitre saw.

If you’re willing to increase the depth to 26”, you could get 2 systainers on each shelf, like I did here:https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/...ake-on-systainer-storage/msg571916/#msg571916

Although each systainer is only 12” deep, an extra inch behind allows you to open the lid in place. If you want doors or drawer fronts that will also add to the depth.

I’m planning to make a bench with miter station using the same approach.

I do not have much of a shop more of a corner where I am always shuffling things around but one thing I do is sort my cutoffs. One big can for burnable and a separate place for pieces suitable to smoke with. I don’t know if you grill or smoke but if you do it might be a consideration. I’m partial to maple, cherry, hickory. Doesn’t every shop have a little grill you pull out for lunch or a break?

I do want to build a guido wall.

My shop has 10' walls so I have plenty of room for a guido wall.

I have a lot of wall space to use for hanging jigs templates etc etc.

Under MFT storage for sustainers is part of the plan.  have dedicated work stations say have the vacuum sys on one MFT and because its perfect for dominion, edge banding sanding etc have a work station with those tools there. I have the STM so I can use that as a cutting station and place to put my pieces to be assembled on the MFTs

[member=10147]jobsworth[/member] I did a post last year about my Kapex Butterfly. I love it. I have a trash can under it. It catch most saw dust that is not getting into the CT Vac. A few other people did a similar design with a place to store pencil and measuring tape. I wish I'd saw those before I built mine. I have 5' L.V. T-track on each side, but I do not recommend them. They are too tight for any t-bolt and jig to my liking. I have the microjig dovetail bit and plan to make a groove beside the t-track. If you use t-track think about how you will slide in and out your stop block. On mine actually I have to slide all the way from both ends

Thank you that is a great idea. I heard that the wood river tracks thats sold by Woodcraft will work with the festool stops. You just have to modify them a bit by cutting off the long leg and use only the short leg.

But that butterfly thingy is awesome

So I set my miter station up for systainer storage on the bottom and a couple other bigger drawers for storing my planer  with a few other things.  My drawers above are for all accessories, hardware and hand tools. I made some open boxes on top of drawers for stuff I use often so it's a little easier to just grab and go and the convenience of my having to open a drawer. 

I don't really have a ton of space so I set my mft and my mobile workstation (mw 1000) in a L shape and just put a sheet of foam in top of that for cutting down sheet goods.  The most convenient thing I made in my shop was probably the cleat wall.. it really comes in handy when getting new things and being able to just slide things around and throw together a new cleat.

Thanks, unfortunately I need space for the kids stuff and the wife.. on the other side of the cleat wall is a full set of kitchen cabinets for her craft stuff and refrigerator... like they say
  "happy wife =happy life"
