jeesh, that's not good. I hope it's not as serious as it looks.
I hope he gets better soon.
In my experience, those kinds of accidents are the result of fatigue (loss of focus) or lack of rest, not sharp tools. Dull tools do just as much damage, but the cut is usually raggedy  and the nurse asks you what implement were you trying to kill yourself with.

JMB's just trying to copy Chris and his accident.

Now we'll get to see if there's any improvement to his typing.  [tongue]

Dean,

Sorry to see JMB's hand / thumb.  Looks almost as bad as when I took the tips of two of my fingers off in a jointer.  The best part of having your fingers bandaged in white is that if you give someone the middle finger salute, they can see it much better.

If you are serious about the chisel sharpening question, I use the Worksharp 3000 for all my plane iron and chisel sharpening.  I also purchased the wide blade attachment for some of my wider plane irons.

I like it pretty well but it does go through the abrasives fairly quickly.  It also is awkward to use for flattening the backs of my chisels.

LoL. Haaahaa can't believe u posted this Dean never crossed my mind when u said send you a picture!

I just saw the topic sharp chisels by Dean and thought umm.... Whats this about!

I was in the A&E for 6hours took sooo long!

Cheers Neil,Tim

It needed 7 stitches in the end!  Good job I went cus I was thinking of just using duct tape to pull it together and carry on but it was bleeding way to much and the lads at work said it was to deep and big to leave and recommended I'd go get it looked at.

I was suppose to be doing a 11hour shift that day to catch up with work well didnt happen.    Its a little bit of both tired and lazy! I admit m working to much but I just can't keep every one happy I can't be everywhere 7days a week just ain't enough!

Also lazy! I was using my chisel for something you should not be using your chisel for especially a just sharpened chisel. It was next to me and I thought I'll use my chisel save time going down strairs getting the proper tools!  Well I lost more time then it saved!

Lol

Yeah, sharp chisels shouldn't be used to open paint cans! use a church key!

Glad you got it looked at... you put the scary in scary sharp.

ouch. I hope you heal quickly!
This is why I upgraded the box of bandaids I used to carry to job sites to a full on first aid kit.

i did the same thing a few years ago, same place by the looks of your blood stain [unsure] i only had 6 stitchers tho, better with a sharp chisel than a blunt one tho

I keep telling myself, keep your hands behind the edge!  Been there more than I care to admit but luckily, I still have all my fingers and no stitches yet!

I cut my hand open also using my chisel for something it wasnt designed for, trying to scrap the extra glue of a glue bottle. I should have gone to the hospital like JMB but my then boss would not take me so I ended up with a big fat ugly scare after just using masking tape, then I still got moaned at for getting blood all over the place !! Thank God im my own boss now.

Oh Dear!    Luckily for me I had people around me who were making me go to the hospital.  If I had a boss who didnt care Im pretty sure I would of done the duct tape idea!

Im glad I didn't!

The cut on my thumb I can hardly see it any more and the large cut just below has healed very well also.  When its cold it does hurt slightly and it goes a purple colour around the area.

I get the same with my ring finger where I did all the nerve and tendon damage the other year. It was really painful on some days over the winter like frost bite.
