I have always wanted to see more info on the FOG about using Festools to finish projects. I know that when I get to the finishing stage, all the platin pads, sheepskins, felt pads and so on are a bit of a mystery to me.

So I made a short video showing how I sand down a shellac finish with an ETS 125. After an initial coat of shellac, I sand it down with the ETS and a Platin 2 1000 grit pad. I DON'T use dust extraction because I want the dust to remain on the surface. I can then use this dust to fill the pores in the wood as I layer on more shellac.

I used the interface pad to ride the curves which is a really useful accessory (you can use it with the rotex too as it is a simple hook and loop pad) and Platin 2 pads.

Note: the legs were scraped with a cabinet scraper, not sanded, prior to finishing.

Brilliant demo as usual Richard.
Those table components are looking very nice.
Are you going to buff the shellac or continue to sand with 1,000 until you are happy with the finish?

Cheers, Tim.

First I have to put the table together. Then I am going to continue with the shellac, then rub it out, more shellac etc. I will move up the platins as I go. You need to put the table together early in the process because the shellac helps fill any gaps in the joinery. Also, I want the legs to be satin rather than glossy otherwise they will draw the eye away from the top and the aprons.

I have something special in mind for the table top which I will describe when I get to it. I got these NAINA Festool abrasives for polishing which i want to try out.

Richard.
