I went to purchase some SW Pro Classic oil base paint in a dark color, Caviar SW 6990. I was told that Pro Classic is for light colors only and I needed to purchase their All Surface Enamel instead. A couple of questions:

Was I given the correct information?

How does All Surface Enamel compare to Pro Classic as far as laying down nicely without any visible brush marks?

What in the world would a fellow do with pc oil in a color such as this?

[big grin]

Yes, pro classis oil appears to be no longer available in deep base formulations. So, I think you got accurate info on that. Oil choices are slowly going the way of the...uh, whatever other obsolete things we can think of...

All surface enamel is actually kind of fun to work with. I have used it on metal and steel applications by brush and foam roller and its a nice lay down kind of coat. Sprays good too.

But why oil?

Cheese, I've used the All Surface Oil on some furniture projects that I wanted to do some dark and/or funky colors with.  It lays down pretty nice (maybe just a little less so than PC) and durability has been very good on table top like surfaces.  I've painted prefinished furniture with it without even scuff sanding and it grabs onto it nicely!!! (I don't recommend doing that but for my purpose it was fine:))

I have had them do a deep base in PC latex and the results varied greatly. I didn't like it and went with an enamel but was still a latex.

Cheers. Bryan.

Thanks guys for the input. I use latex on everything except doors & trim, I've always used oil on trim...I know old school. I've also been extremely happy with how Pro Classic turns out being brushed on. If you take your time the finished product looks like it was sprayed. I'll go back to SW today and pick up a quart of All Surface to try and to do a color check with.

A couple of more questions:
All Surface is an oil based paint, correct?
Is there a latex product available that when brushed on, flows as well and looks as nice as Pro Classic? I like the semi-gloss or satin look.

I'm refinishing 13 Marvin casements that are 6' tall and 2' wide each that are in a sunroom I built a number of years ago. When I originally installed the windows I coated them with 5 coats of water based clear poly and they were beautiful. In the intervening years we had some humidity issues and they peeled in some areas and in others they turned black. As much as I love the clear look, there's no going back now with all of the black spots. And then there's the issue of trying to find a color that will complement 13 screens, window actuators, window locks and bezels. [eek]

All surface comes in oil or latex.  Cashmere is the only other product I've used that lays down nice for trim when brushed.

I love Cashmere too, I don't think they offer much in deep base though. I used Emerald this week on some brushed doors (white), it was a pretty sweet finish. Laid down vertically.
