I have a quick question or advise needed.  I am making a cabinet for the shop, I have 2 sheets of ply both 16" wide.  The base is going to be 28" wide.  What is the better method:  rip both pieces to 14" and then domino together, or domino them first and the rip to the 28"?

Domino first, then trim to fit as required.  Keep in mind that a single 4" offcut can be more useful later than two 2" offcuts.

How deep is the cabinet?
How long is the 16" wide piece(s)

The cabinet will be 28" wide and 54" long.  There will be another that is 28"x40".  Right now both sheets are 96" long.

Which is more useful to you 2 narrow pieces of drop, or one wider piece?

At first I would say didn't matter, but now, I think having the 4 inch cutoff would be better.

Go figure isn't that the same scenario your in now.. having two pieces not wide enough so your joining them.. (the 2" pieces might not be wide enough for whatever you might use them for, so you might have to join them... as your original situation put you in.) lol

You're going in circles man!!!, lol

def take the 4" piece. Looks like it's gonna work out for you, and my suggestion would be join then cut to dimension.

If your little Lego thing flashing an idiot sign is directed at me, please don't comment in this thread.  I was looking for advise, for using up some materials and best way to maximize material, and whether joining first before final sizing was best.  I don't mind being criticized, or being told that my method is wrong or something else, but don't insult me by calling me an idiot.

That is his signature.  It would therefore show up in all of his posts and could be interpreted as being directed toward everyone who reads anything he writes.

No insult ment here sir,  I have also learned from this thread.

I have always used this little Lego man because I throught it was funny and saying more of me then the reader  [big grin]

Back to the original question.  I always like to wait until the last minute to make that final cut, just in case there are surprises, like dropping a piece and getting a bent corner.  So I would Domino first, then trim - regardless of whether I wanted two cutoffs or one.

Thanks for responding.  It's all good.
