can anyone recommend a shop vac that can be moved from tool to tool as I use them. It will not get a lot of use but I have some respiratory problems at 70 years old and want to protect my lungs. so I want to buy a good one.

Why not one of the Festool vacuums?  The HEPA rating means you won't have small dust particles in the air that can aggravate your lung issues.

You can choose from the variety of vacuums Festool offers based on the capacity you need.

The Festool vacs are half as loud as a regular shop vac too, which is really nice. Your neighbors will thank you. plus they are powerful and can be turned down to sand without leaving swirl marks, caused by sucking the sander to the wood, especially on woods like pine. Be prepared for sticker shock though. FWIW I have around $600 into my Dyson Animal for inside the house so...

    The Festool vacs are Full Unit certified HEPA. Not just a HEPA filter. So you are looking in the right place for a vac to protect your lungs.  They are easy to roll around a shop. The CT26 and CT36  a very popular models for shop use. Same suction power just different size and capacity.

    What tools do you plan on connecting?

Seth's question is critical.

Even Fein and Festool vacs won't work with the larger power tools like full size table saws, jointers, and planers. Those tools require high volume air flow that shop vacs cannot supply.

I have one Fein and 3 Festool vacs. I prefer the Festool vacs. The Home Depot type shop vacs may have great suction, but typically are shrill and loud. They also suck at particle filtration. The let the little stuff into the air and that's what gets your lungs.

I am 69 and have 5 Festool sanders and an OF 1400, when hooked up to my CT 36 my lungs are well protected. As I have stated previously, when I refinished my bathroom cabinets I did not even empty the cabinets. After sanding the faces down to bare wood there was no dust on the things in the cabinets. Using the router with the CT is amazing. Incredibly dust free. You do not want a shop vac, you want a Festool CT 26 or 36.
